I beleave that the 338 RUM shooting 225gr Nosler Partition bullet could take any animal in the world except the big 5 in Africa. What do you think?

Hi, I don't have a 338 RUM but I do have a 338 Lapua Mag and also load for a 338/378 Weatherby Mag. Of all the bullets I've tried, The Barnes 225gr TSX worked the best. A friend of mine took his 338/378 to Africa and everything he shot was one shot kills. Accuracy is great and these two calibers love RL-25 with the 225gr TSX. Jesse's Weatherby shoots a 3 3/4" five shot group at 500 meters with this bullet and powder. He's also getting 3290 fps across my chrony. If you are going to shoot a cartridge with this much case capicity, why not give this bullet a try? I've tried the other Barnes X bullets and have not been impressed with the accuracy and copper fouling but these Tripple Shock X / TSX bullets have beat that problem. The only complaint that I have gotten from all the friends I've loaded the TSX's for is that when they shoot at game, now they fall down? I hope this is a good thing? ha ha. Give the TSX's a try, I think you'll like them. Catch you later, The Big Dog The Big Dog

Jro45: I believe you are quite correct! And with those Nosler Partition 225's you would also be able to cleanly harvest at least a couple of the "Big Five" as well! The 338 RUM is an excellent performer in the field as are the Nosler 338 caliber 225 gr. Partitions. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

Since lion (max 450 lbs) and leopard (max 190 lbs) are two of the "Big 5", I would say that you underestimate the applications of a .338/225 Nosler traveling in excess of 3000 fps. In fact, most of the buffalo, rhino, and elephant killed in the first third of the 20th century were killed with much less potent loads.

Yeah your probably right it would just bounce off them lions, leopards, and cape buffaloes. "Science only goes so far then God takes over."

Jro 45, your probably right but for that big cas I would closely look at the woodleigh range of 300 gr .338 bullets as a better combo bit less speed making for more reliable penetration and the sd of a wooddleigh 300 gr .338 bullet is around .375.................penetration for ever !! I reckon youcould near run your .338 rum with woodleigh 300 gr bullets as fast as I could run my .338 win mag with woodleigh 225 gr bullets (my combo in my Ruger .338 win mag). Use that bigger case to drive heavier bullets if your after tough game I say, if just shooting vermin for fun load a nos bt and blow dinner plate sized exits through them

The Big Dog, I would love to hear more about your mate's experiences with the 338-378 in Africa. What did he clobber with it? Just bought an Accumark in 338-378 for the same purpose. It loves the 240NF softs with RE-25!!

I use RL25 Powder for my 338 RUM loads. Sounds like it is pretty popular for the big 338s.

jro45, I gives outstanding accuracy and velocity in my 300 Rum with 168, 180, and 200 grain bullets as well. H1000 is almost as good, but doesn't give the velocity.

Well I get with H1000 with the 180gr bullet 3250 fps with 96gr. With the 165gr bullet I get not a premium bullet 3267 fps 98gr and with the 200 I get 3020fps 92gr. What the reload book says is not always right you gotta shoot thru a conagraph to get true fps I like H1000 myself even if it isn't the fastest powder for my 300 RUM
