I'm really having a blast with this rifle. I may do the boyds stock thing with my rifle after the first hunting season. I think yours looks great. I've been practicing with it in hunting situations and I love the accuracy. The only bad thing so far is I've noticed that my supply of powder is running low at a quicker rate. LOL Cool I loaded 20 rounds last night to finish with the barrel break in. Since it was a won gun I'm going to use it at the start of our deer season till I can see its terminal effects. Good hunting BB2

Restocking your Vanguard can be great off season project. I had a Maple black shaped by Richard's Microfit stocks for my 300 Wby Vanguard.

Have fun with it

I have 41 rifles and my favorite for western and long range shooting is my remington custom shop 700 in 300 wby; in fact, I like the caliber so much, I am having a new one built using a Lilja barrel and a Mcmillan stock.
30-378 or 7mm ultramag; THOSE are overbore, and I load them down to reduce muzzle blast etc.

To comment on the eye relief issues, I still have my scar from the first time I shot mine several years ago. Honestly, I don't use it that often b/c it is overkill for anything smaller than elk. However, I have a vangaurd submoa stainless, probably the similar to the one you won, and it shoots straighter than anything in the gun safe. And, I have a crowded gun safe. I really use it for coyotes or just plinking at long distances. The thing shoots on a bee line out to 300 yards. If I ever do any pronghorn hunting, it'll be my choice of weapon.

P.S. I put a Vais muzzle break on mine (did that before I discovered the wonders of the lead sled), and it now shoots like an -06. The vais breaks really don't increase muzzle blast that much either, but they are very pricey. I couldn't tell a difference in the blast after I put it on, and they are removable. archer

I can't believe I just admitted to using a muzzle blast. homer

I've gotten used to the recoil in the loads that I've shot so far so I think I'll keep the eye relief at just shy of 4", as I have with other guns put some scar tissue between the eyes. At 100 yards the gun if I do my part will cloverleaf. I haven't shot it farther yet. The worst cut I ever got was from a single shot 30-30 H&R topper. I took alot of ribbing for that. I sighted the rifle in standing up and recoil isn't to bad.( I have a torn roter cup)I'll try shooting it long range this winter hunting coyotes over frozen ponds. BB2

It's a perfect gun for that. I currently have a ridiculous rig on top of mine... a 3.5X20 power Leupold with a 30 millimeter lense. It's one of those fanch shmancy boon and crocket ones that give windage and additional yardage markers. The problem wih the scope is that it doesn't give much eye relief, and it adds significant weight to the rifle. I have no idea how I got suckered into that buy. That scope is worth more than my rifle, but you can't sell used scopes for squat.

That scope is the only reason I haven't gotten rid of mine. There's nothing else I want to put it on, and having a 338 win mag makes owning a weatherby a little redundant. The win mag isn't quite as flat, but it can haul off a lot heavier bullets than the weatherby.

I imagine that I will continue to plink, play sniper, and blow up coyotes until soemeone gives me a reasonable offer on the rifle. Maybe I should give it to my brother... give him a little scope gap. stir

I too have the M70 XTR that I got used. Picked up about a month ago from Gander Mountain for 330$! Its got some scabard wear on the stock, but thats the only problem asthetically. Just loaded up some test rounds the other night with 165gr Fail Safe that I had sitting around. I intended to use 180 TTSX, but there weren't enough that met my weight varience preference and nobody around here has anymore in stock, so the FS it is this year. Put that on top of some RL22, and it has a Nikon Monarch 3-12x42 with nice eye relief. I'll be taking it out to the range this weekend to do my first round of load development, then again next week to narrow it down, load up the best and go hunt next month

Last winter I thought a good project would be to put together a new rifle. I decided on a .300 Weatherby Vanguard.

I ordered a AA Fancy Feather Crotch Claro stock from Richards Microfit. Getting the stock took longer than anticipated, so my winter project ran into the summer.

I had a barrel diameter KDF muzzle brake installed, and I did a trigger job that gives me a crisp trigger break that is fully adjustable and set at 2 1/2 pounds. For optics I chose a 4-12x Leupold with Leupold rings and bases.

I pillar and glass bedded the action and glass bedded the barrel channel and free floated the barrel. I installed a Limbsaver reciol pad on it to give me my desired 14" length of pull. I also installed Uncle Mike's QD 100 sling bases into the stock, to match my other hunting rifles.

I finished the stock with ten coats of Tru Oil that I buffed to a smooth satin finish with 6/0 steel wool.

The checkering pattern that I like and have done to several of my other rifles is a multi-panel pattern that I originally got from Brownell's. I finally finished both sides of the pistol grip checkering last week, but now it's into hunting season, so checkering the forend will have to wait until this comming winter.

My first trip to the range with IMR 7828 powder, CCI 250 primers, R-P brass, and 180 gr Barnes TSX bullets produced a 5/8" 3-shot group at 3159 fps.

I think this will me my new favorite Elk rifle.

Yesterday I was shooting this .300 Wby Vanguard at the range when the guy on the next bench was having problems with his new Rem 700 in .30-06 (with the factory POS plastic stock buttplate), and asked me for some help. He said the reciol was starting to bother him even though he said he weighed 290 pounds. I shot 6 or so factory shells through his rifle, and the recoil of his .30-06 felt harder than my .300 Wby.

THAT is a gorgeous rifle! I've always prefered the KDF brakes since they're inline and dont protrude like some other designs. Plus, its removable for the field. Even without the checkering you have a very, very nice rifle there.

Elgin Gates, shot just about every thing on the Planet with one, and then some. I took one Moose hunting in 1972 it was a MK V 24 inch barrel. I didn't shoot it a whole lot, the gun shot well and every thing I shot will it fell down. Its not as wide spread as the 300 Winnie but there are plenty of loads and bass around, so that is a moot point today, not so in 72. Bullets are a lot better too, so its a lot more gun as well today than in 72 as well.

I have used it a little and I have observed its use many, many times and its a killing machine and shoots flatter n a flitter...Anyone that badmouths the 300 Wby, just knows not from whence he came and is full of it...

That said, I am not a 300 Wby fan, preferring the 300 H&H for no particular reason other than I can handload pretty close to a Wby with the 200 gr. Noslers...and I have had it for many years...

Had a Dumolin rifle in 300 Wby a long time ago, should have kept it. Just as a bit of trivia, about 40 years ago a customer sent in a box of brass that he wanted us to reload for him. Opened the box and there was the classic Wby shoulder with little (tiny) short necks on them. Brass was marked 300 Winchester! Only time that I've ever heard it done. Just be sure and stay away from your buddies 338 Win ammo and don't load one by mistake... they will drop right in. I've heard of 4 times this was done, fortunately without injury but there is a first time for everything. Enjoy your WBY.

I traded into a Winchester 70 XTR in 300 Wby about a year ago. I had the metal coated with TR Gunkote and then had it bedded into a new synthetic stock. I'll be honest, when I traded for the rifle I wasn't excited about it. I thought it might be something to have some fun with. That rifle is quickly becoming one of my favorites. In fact I used it on a black bear hunt in Maine just last month. Bang flop, one dead bear. Not even a twitch.
