I have a 300 RUM. I've been reloading 180 grain nosler partitions and 95 grains of R 25. In a clean cold barrel it places the first 2 shots within 1/4" but the 3rd shot it throws 1 1/2 to 2" out. I've tried more powder but I get into pressure problems. This is a 26" shaw barrel on a rem 700 action. I have the action bedded and the barrel is free floated.
I have heard the first two shots are the most important any way what do you guys think.

Chances are that your barrel is simply getting hot. It may take ten to fifteen minutes before it will cool enough to put the third shot with the first two.

Next range trip, allow fifteen minutes for the barrel to cool, then try the third shot. Until we know the results of this test, there isn't much point in speculating farther...

Let us know what you find out.

How fast are you shooting those three shot groups. You must keep in mind when shooting a cartridge that consumes 95 grains of powder per round in a sporter weight barrel it will get very warm in only three rounds. Try waiting five or more minutes between shots. Heat build up in the barrel will make your groups swell. You shoot that 300 RUM fast and you will fry the throat on your barrel in as little as 600 rounds. Why would you think trying more powder would solve that problem? I also think you must learn much more about the cartridge your shooting and how to load for that cartidge.

I shot again same result. first 2 shots together 1 out 1 1/2 inches. I waited between shots about 1 min or so. This is s hunting rifle. I do not just fire off rounds one after another non stop. I do not want to wait 10 min because I want to know its hunting accuracy. I contacted nosler, sierra, and various internet sugextions before I bagen reloading. Mabey I do need to learn more about the cartridge so tell me.

As was already mentioned, it is likely your barrel is heating up, and changing your point of impact. Quite frankly, if the gun has you baffled, I'd talk to the guy who built it, not the ammo companies. At least the smith can tell you what the tolerances would be and can maybe surmise if he needs to expand them.

Don,

I have a Win. Mdl 70 in .300 Win. Mag.. It does the same thing, first two shot about ” to 1” apart, put the third shot down there and it will be 2” to 3” out, usually high and right with all of the bullets I have tested (Nosler included). It has a free floating bbl and bedded action in a synthetic stock. If I spread out the 3 shots over time or wait about 5 to 10 minutes on the last shot they all hang together at about 1” to 1 ”.

From my prospective it is the first shot that counts and I strive to do all that I need to do with that shot. Even if I need the second shot it is still close enough. Best of luck

Kind regards

Try putting 15-20 pounds of upward pressure on the bottom of the barrel in the barrel channel in the forend. Maybe what you need is to dampen barrel vibrations a little. One or two thicknesses of business card should give you an idea if this is going to help, and it can be removed if it doesn't help.

Don the first two shots are the most important and likely all you will get at that elk or deer if not put on target. Even if your 2 inches out on your 3rd shot, your still in the kill zone on an elk at 300 yards with your gun.

Yes, it is nice if your rifle will print at least 3 shots into the target you hung up, but most guys shoot very slow to get this to happen and in the field, that elk or deer is not going to wait 15 or 30 seconds for the next shot to take place, before he hightails it into the dark timber. My motto is hit them well with the first shot and just as fast with the second shot.......I am not at a bench rest tournament OK. You might also give those Barnes XLC bullets a try in the near future just for kicks. My 338 mag prints one ragged hole with these bullets for 5 slow shots.

You could try dropping your powder doseage down some by .2 tenths and experiment this way, until your shot group starts to widen up. Sometimes it will let you keep a better 5 shot group. However saying that how many of us hunters get 5 consecutive shots at any animal.

I have a suggestion for you OK. The next time your out at the range, let someone who can in fact shoot a big gun and let them see if they can keep that 3 shot from wavering off as much. You may be starting to develope a flinch and not know it as yet. Good Luck!

There isn't anything wrong with the rifle. I understand you only wanting to wait one minute between shots, but then you're comparing the accuracy with people who are letting it cool at least 5 minutes between shots. With a big game rifle most shots are going to be two days apart, I wouldn't worry about a third one being out of the group, after the second shot, most game will be out of the county.

Might help to have the barrel cryogenically (sp?) treated as it probably has a spot that needs to be relieved. Kind of got a "kink" that moves when it is heated. I dont know what the charge is to have a barrel treated.

I shoot 3 shot groups out of my 300ultra waiting only as long as it takes to reload and reaim and I am getting consistant 1/2" groups. My load is 96gr of reloader 25 behind a 180gr bullet.Three shots does not overheat a barrel as long as you let it cool fully between groups.

don What happens if you shoot 5 or 6 shots. Do shots 4,5, and 6 hit with shot 3, or do they continue to scatter about? Does it still scatter shot number 3 if you start with a dirty bbl?
