Hi What are your thoughts on these two Rounds. My brother and I want one gun for North America. Texas to Alaska. We have narrowed it down to these. Dr B
If you want one gun you should step up to a .300 WIN MAG. If it has to be a 7MM, I would switch to a 7MM REM MAG. You can do everything with this round that you can do with a RUM or STW, and the ammo is much more plentiful.
I'll vote for the STW as well, but I'm most definately biased. I own the 7mm STW, but haven't yet had the pleasure of even firing the 7 RUM. So take it or leave it for what it's worth to you.

Forgot to mention that I'll second GAhunters feelings that if it is to cover Alaska I personally would want something that punched a bigger entrance hole than a 7mm, like a 338 or more 30 minimum, but to each his own.

I have to agree about ammo availibility. the 7mm rem mag ammo can be found anywhere. If you want more punch go to a 338 wm. it has the same case as the 7mm rem mag with more power and still less kick than the 7mm Rum.

If u wanna hunt everything with one rifle. That would be hard if u dont want over kill. But .300winmag to a .325wsm to a .(name your elephant cartidge) would be better for alaska game that a 7mm.

Having fired both cartridges a fair bit with similar weight guns and the same stock, I disagree with that point. Both feel comparable to me.The extra bullet weight of the 338win makes up for the extra powder burned by the 7mmultramag.

I own a 7 Rum. I like it. Shoots about as flat as my 300 Rum. You have to handload to realize its potential. Same with the STW I believe. But I don't shoot one of those. The Rum doesn't kick as bad as alot of people say. Then again I don't think my 338 win or 300 rum kick bad either. I have the 7 in the rem700 LSS. I shoot a load with 150 partition at 3450 fps. Playing with the 140 tsx to see what it'll do with it. Just reloaded a bunch but haven't been able to get out and shoot those yet. The rum burns more powder than the STW for about 50-100 fps more with most bullet weights. Don't own either with less than a 26" bbl. They both need at least that to perform up to snuff. The 7 rum would benefit from more. Maybe the STW too. Plenty of punch from both to take anything short of game that bites back at stupifying long range if you can hit em right. Being able to take advantage of the long range capapbility is what seperates these two from the 7 mm rm. Being able to shoot well enough to actually do it is another thing altogether. Practice practice practice. I need more. I know that.
I don't think many would have come to the same two choices for a top-to-bottom NA gun, so maybe if you list your reasons we can help you better decide between the two. The thought of one gun is just sad to me. I'd personally take a 280 Rem or 7mm Rem and a 338 Win or 375 H&H (or RUM if you must, but on a rebarreled M70 300 RUM) and call it good. There's just no good reason I can see why two working men can't afford two guns between them, be it a 710 or Savage or used Ruger. If someone tald me your choices were all I had, I'd go STW. With a 26" bbl it barely makes the cut under insanely overbore in my book. I'd shoot heavy bullets out of it, too, and lament the lack of a good Swede every whitetail season....

are you going the custom route or getting a factory rifle. if going factory i would find the rifle you like then see which calibers are offered, that might narrow the search down a bit, there is also only 1 factory loading for the 7 ultra so handloading is a must
i just picked up a 7 ultra sendero and love it, its alot heavier than most rifles but it shoots like a dream, got the dies ordered cant wait till i can see how well this rifle can really shoot
Factory loads for both the 7mmstw and the 7mmultramag are pathetic.Handloads will on average gain you 150fps with no pressure signs and good brass life.

Personally I'll take a 7MM Rem Mag over either of them. And, yes, this comes from a man that had them both.

I'm a 7m/m Rem mag fan and think it the best choice if you insist on .284" bullets, however I also think if you're looking for a universal N.A. round you will be best served by the 300 H&H/Win/Wby Magnums. The only thing better would be two guns, 30-06 and 338 Winchester. If this combination won't work, I don't know what will.
There is not enough difference to be concerned with. I shoot the 7 Ultra Mag in a Remington Sendero and my buddy the 7 STW in a Model 70. Both will do an excellent job. Just decide whether you like Remington or Winchester best and go with it. Both shoot very flat and hit very hard with relatively little recoil.
