stripper clips
Why is it that stripper clips never caught on for sporting rifles? Doesn't seem to me to be any real disadvantage to making them available.

Stripper clips were very popular on sporting rifles right up until about 1950. The mass production of riflescopes (and gunwriters who promoted them) effectively killed off the stripper clip. I still use them on most of rifles (Brno's and Mannlichers). They are a great way to carry cartridges.

I wonder if the need, or lack of, is what really drove the market. Other than a 10/22, I only have one rifle that has a detatchable mag, an AR I use for varmints. Even if my 375H&H or 7STW did have a D/M, I doubt that I'd ever find the occasion in which I'd need a stripper clip in the field. I reckon if I was about to get myself ate up by a big bear and already had dumped 4 rounds from the 375 into him, I don't know that I'd be able, or have the time to use a stripper clip anyway. When looking at the option of the bear or 4 more quickies from my light weight 375, it may be more appealing to get chewed on by the bear. [Big Grin]
