RUGER #1 35 WHELEN 1/16 TWIST QUESTION

Might jump on one of these. I really like the Whelen. My current Whelen is an AI bolt gun that I went 1/14 twist on.

The Ruger #1 comes 1/16. Anyone see any issues with me shooting the 225gr Accubond? 225gr TSX? 225gr GameKing??

How about the 200gr Hornady FlexTip??

Thanks for the help on this one.

I don't think you will have any problem will bullets up to 250 grains. However, the twist is too slow to shoot bullets heavier than that. My Remington Classic shot the 225s and 250s great, especially the 250 Speer which is a real killer.

Dave,

Which Speer? I bought a few hundred rounds of the no longer made (brain fart, not remembering the name..). I guess they are now replaced by the Speer Grand Slams.

My 35 Whelen AI likes them.

I mostly will be shooting 200 and 225gr with the Ruger #1 (if I pull that plug).

I had one of their stainless models. It shot 225 gamekings the best, then 225 tsx. Accuracy fell off after 2500fps with anything I ran through it.

My 35 Whelen #1 Stainless (factory) has a 1:12 twist.
Wish it was a 1:16 which is better for cast bullets which is all I shoot out of it..

The Speer you might be thinking of is the "Hot Core". Excellent bullet on elk. My Whelen is 1/12 not by my design, but by the barrelers. However, several of my shooting buddies have 1/16's and they shoot 250's great. Personally, I like the 225 Ballistic tip, now Accubond, smokes elk also. As to heavier bullets, if you need more than a 250 grain, anything, use a Magnum, as I do.
