MARK H. YOUNGFeeding the 270 Weatherby
Folks,
I just had a rifle rebarrelled to 270 Weatherby with 26" Douglas barrel. At this time I have only tried factory Weatherby ammo with the 150 gr. Hornady bullet which it shoots fairly well. The rifle has the standard Weatherby throat and I was wondering what loads have worked for any 270 Weatherby shooters on the forum. If the rifle will shoot them I'd like to use the 130 TSX or NP.
THX

mhoFWIW, IMR 7828 is supposed to be one of the powders to make this round really come alive...

snowmanMark I had a custom Mauser built last year in 270 Wby. A max load of 7828 and the 130 TSX groups about 1 inch @ 200 yds. I used this rifle on a huge old Saskatchewan whitetail buck this fall. One shot @ 300yds,one picture perfect mushroomed TSX bullet and one old buck just flopped on the ground. RL25 also provided some very good groups and will warrant futher testing next spring.

Mark DobrenskiMark I've mainly worked with the 150's if I remember right.
And for what it is worth in both of those rifles it shot the 150 Horns and IMR 4350 into little tiny bug holes!

buckshotMark-
I loaded 270 Wby with IMR 7828, and it's one of the best powders going. It was also the only powder that worked well with the 140 grain XBT bullet giving 3350 FPS. RL25 might be a good one, but RL22, and H1000 were far faster burning then expected and gave pressure signs way before top velocities were reached. In fact, I didn't break 3200 FPS until I tried IMR 7828, and that was in a Winchester model 70 with 26" barrel.
I have always held the opinion that the 270 was a calibre that demanded premium bullets; it's especially true in the Weatherby round. Today's TSX is much improved compared to the original X and XBT, so give IMR 7828 a try.

Charles_HelmI've had good luck with the Weatherby factory loads -- 130 grain Partition and 140 grain Barnes X.
