Brother in law asked me to sight in his new rifle, a Winchester Stainless Stalker with camoflauge stock in 270 WSM. He also has a .243. He accidently loaded a 243 into the 270WSM. When I shot the rifle the gas hit me in the face as well as erupted into a small cloud. At first I thought it was just a peirced primer, but discover otherwise when I pulled the case out. All in all extremely lucky. I do not know if a Remington action would have even fired and whether it would have handled the problem any better.

Thank god that you weren't hurt. NEVER let another man load a gun that YOU are going to fire. Load it yourself.

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

I fired a 270 in a 7mag Savage 110 once. Not any gas to the face, at all. Plenty of it into the action, however.... Still digging pieces of brass out of various recesses. Some actions DO manage gas better than others. JMO, Dutch.

Definitely scared me! After knoking the brass out of the chamber I cleaned the rifle. Examined the bolt closely! As I was getting ready to fire the correct round I could not pull the trigger. I kept looking at the bolt and thinking that if it was damaged that it would come back and go through my jaw! Finally just held rifle at arms length and pulled trigger! Next rounds went well but had to really concentrate to NOT flinch. All in all a really sobering experience.

Guess now we know it is impossible to fireform 243's to 270WSM's, huh?! definately a good thing you did not get hurt. Shrapnel to the face kinda sucks(not that I know firsthand...).

As far as wildcats go I doubt that the .243 / 270 WSM GatorT/C improved is really going to take off .

Go buy a lottery ticket .

The hunting imperative was part of every man's soul; some denied or suppressed it, others diverted it into less blatantly violent avenues of expression, wielding clubs on the golf course or racquets on the court, substituting a little white ball for the prey of flesh and blood.

Worst I ever did was a 308 in a 30.06. That scared me enough when I realized it. Sure is funny looking.

I had a similar experience. All I saw was a ball of fire and my face got real warm real fast. As luck would have it, the scope kept all shrapnel below my eye. My 6 yr. old son was with me and at the shot, he began screaming. I told him that everything was OK and to calm down. Then he looks up at me in tears and says " but Dad, your face is bleeding". All I could think to say was "Well, maybe we SHOULD go home then".

Lesson learned
