Dear All,

I have to carry a heavier rifle in the field, and I have heard people sing the praise of wider slings for this purpose. If I could find a wider, non-stretch and fairly lightweight sling, that did not slip on the shoulder, that would be about ideal... I need to use it with 1" swivels.

Do any of you know if such an animal exists, and if yes possibly a Web reference to where to pick it up??

I use a canvas sling like the old english ones. It has brass fittings. The ones I use have a rubber thread woven thru it on the side that touches the sholder which makes it pretty non slip. I got mine from Cabelas but see they don't list themany more. I think Jeff's Outfitters has about the same one only difference being theirs has a buckle on the ends in place of a brass fitting.--------P.S Just got the current GunList and on page 50 is the picture of the sling I use on all my rifles. The dealer is Trader Keiths.It's $50 in his add. I use them on my doubles and all my big bores. They were cheaper at Cabelas of course. It's basically the same as the Westley Richards I believe.

Try the Westley-Richards web site. They sell, what I believe, is the widest sling available at 2 inches width. I have two of these that I use on double rifles. I can tell you it certainly takes the pain out of carrying a heavy rifle... kind of classy looking too!

Sorry for highjacking a bit, but my brother uses a safari sling and is very pleased. Wide strap and always ready to go. Just a thought.
I am seriously looking for 1 I also have a heavy gun.

Geronimo, I did a search here and saw the Westley-Richards sling has quite a following on AR (expensive, though...). Do the leather "ends" of the sling fit a 1" swivel?? It is hard to see on the website how wide the leather attachments are.

How does the canvas age?? Graciously like leather, or does it just get "yucky" from sweat, rain, gun-oil, blood and what not...

I use the Uncle Mike's Mountain Sling pretty exclusively now, after years of leather. The MS is fabric, and is truly non-slip, and costs $20 or so.

Match shooters are starting to go to biothane slings because they don't crack, they stick to the shoulder and don't stretch. Try here.

Mike, I like the padded super slings pretty well. They may not be the prettiest or the classiest, but they're pretty nice when lugging a heavy rifle around.

I like a 7/8" sling, it does not slip off the shoulder over and over again, but I don't use a sling anymore than I absolutly have to...I like being ready to shoot...

An outfit named Galinni (SP?) makes a neophrene type sling that gives with each step and its wide but clings to the shoulder and gives with each step..It is quit an invention..I have one and really like it but again don't use it much..I think I got it from Cabellas.

I just bought a Vero Vellini sling for this year's hunt, and gotta say I like it best of all the slings I've tried.

If you really want a wide, padded sling ... the most rational one I've found is the US Military sling for the M60 Machinegun (believe it or not).

They aren't pretty but they do work nicely for heavier rifles and they are tough.

These Brownell's Latigo Leather Rifle Slings are hard to beat. They don't slip.

if you want the cheapest lightest sling available do what I did. Go to a fabric store, buy some 2 inch khaki cotton webbing, and attach uncle mikes swivels directly to it. There is no leather, no noise and it wraps up to go into my pocket. If you want, you can run two very small beads of silicone on the inside for grip, but I have never needed it. I actually like being able to move it at will easily without it grabbing my shirt._BAxter

Take a look at the slings offered by www. Jeffsoutfitters.com I have two on RSM's and very nice for the bucks(catalog special price of I believe 40.00) As for the military type, the very best you can buy are those offered by Leslie Tam(Leslie Tam Rifle Slings.) Have two used for Service Rifle match shooting since late 80's and yet today are like new and no stretch and no slide on arm with high position near shoulder. Top quality in all respects and frankly makes Turner look like something bought at flea markets. Check him out and give him a call and you will not be sorry for doing so.
