Sitting thinking what else I could do to my rifle, cheap, of course. Took it apart, took off the recoil pad and noticed the stock is machined out, a rectangular cylinder shape, about 5"s in depth. While the 270 Win. is not a mule, recoil wise, my Abolt Medallion is a fairly light gun and full power handloads can cause some shoulder pain the next day after much shooting.

I sat and thought and thought what I can put in their to fill up that space and add some weight. I was trying to come up with something of a mechanical/hydraulic concept like advanced archery stabilisers. I decided that any money I put into it probably wouldn't soak up much recoil, rifle recoil being much sharper than bow recoil.

The idea then came to mind to just fill the cavity up with sand. So I took a common window screen as a sieve, went out to a sandf pit in my back yard, and strained some fine sand. I filled the cavity up with the sand leaving about a 1/4" gap at the top. I poured the sand out and weighed it in batches on my powder scale. It totalled 2025 grains of sand or a little under 1/3 of a pound weight added. I poured the sand back in, then topped it off with some Weldbond glue flush with the stock top.

It is drying right now but I bet the properties of that sand will make a nice, inert weight and balance the rifle nicely. Total cost is probably about 50 cents worth of Weldbond.

My question is this. How does that added weight affect the balance of that rifle? I guess if you don't like the change in balance, you can always drill that stuff out and dump the sand.
Me? If I'd had that problem, I'd have just replaced whatever pad that was on the gun with a Pachmeyr Decellerator pad and gone with that.
The one I put on my .300 win. mag. sure made it feel a heck of a lot better.

It is going to probably take about 1 week for that glue to completely dry clear through, but the top is dried enough where I put the gun together last night and without the scope, was happy with the balance. The scope should make it even better. I personally do not like rifle's featherweighted in the stock. This tweak is proving to be better than I thought it would be. That fine grain sand might buffer some minute amount of vibration upon recoil as well.

Yes.

I prefer the Limbsaver vs. the Pachmayer. The original recoil pad is actually heavier than both the Limbsaver or Pachmayer but was so rigid it was basically disfunctional.

I've mixed lead shot with epoxy and applied in really light rifles at diff points in the stock to balance them. It helps the balance and recoil.

I have seen people make a small sandbag that just fits the cavity and use modeling clay, sand or lead shot to fill it.

Fjold,

What is with that picture of that woman as your avatar?

Why would someone want to display "Hey, I'm a pervert!" in their avatar? Just looking out for you Frank.

Another thing a person could do is first fill the stock cavity with a couple inches depth of "Great Stuff" foam in a can, then fill the rest with sand in a bag or lead shot in a bag. When the gun recoil's, it should compress the foam and perhaps provide some sort of cushion. Might not be worth the effort though. Probably just free flowing sand sealed off with Weldbond or some other glue might be better.

Gidday ar corey,

Franks avatar involves womens breasts which as most males would agree I find interesting and nice to watch. I am pretty sure most heterosexuals males find the female breast pleasant to watch.

A perversion by definition is something outside the norm.

I would therefore suggest that it is not Frank that is the pervert but anyone who does not find these interesting and amusing.

I am amazed by the perverted nature of some who would denigrate the beauty of another of Gods most beautiful creations designed to give life.

Just looking out for you ar corey.

Gidday guys,

Your idea ar corey to place a bag of sand/shot inside the foam in a plastic stock is a great one.

Not only would the weight slow down recoil but the foam would as you say soak up a bit more while keeping the stock quiet if knocked. good thinking.

Well sir, I'm sorry that you find a woman's body "perverted".

But, "live and let live" is my motto so I don't care what your sexual preference is.

Yes, at home, in their bedroom, with their wife.

What's normal about a woman walking like that? When I see that, I see a woman who is loud, stubborn, flirty, flaunting, obnoxious, rebellious, and unfaithful. I am not attracted to these traits because these are not the traits of a real woman.

You mention hetero-sexual yet you assume that just because a body has breasts, the spirit and behavior of a real woman is in that body.

A real woman exhibits behaviour of meekness, passivness, kindness, love, caring, obediance, cheerfullness, creativity and gladness. I see none of those here.

Looking at someone acting like a whore is perverted in my opinion. To each his own I guess.

Please understand, I grew up a pervert, and in a perverted household so I know what it is like to be one. I saw my first XXX movie at 10. Been there, done all that.

God didn't create those, her parents did. God gave us the power to make babies and we make them. God is able to give us the knowledge and wisdom on how to properly raise those babies but in this case, this woman was not raised this way, hence her style of clothing and behaviour. This is not her fault. Till she meets a real man, she will have no motivation to change.

Just a thought about your sand. Was it completely dry, as in all the moisture baked out? Dampness in that sand could cause a problem if you seal the end air tight.

Who cares about the sand?
Let's talk some more about ar corey's suppressed sexuality.
[For the record, ar, I agree: woman's breasts are only truly pleasant to watch in my own bedroom.]

Gee ar corey

you seem to have some sort of hang-up abouts tits there my man. 51% of the worlds population are endowed with breasts , everywhere you look - there they are , good old tits , staring you in the face. Just stare right back - if they didnt want them looked at they would cover them up.

That idea about a small bag of sand or similar is a good one - although I might suggest tht perhaps you drill an extra hole in the stock of your rifle and have two bags - you know full well that all the best things in life are found in pairs....

You are one repressed, insecure, boring S.O.B.

If you find no enjoyment in a woman of spirit, but only with a pathetic wallflower doormat of a woman to make you feel like a man, you need help.

What did you do, get a mail-order bride from some economically depressed country?

Oh, and you think any attractive woman who dresses to attract attention is a whore? Get back to the 19th century...

Just my opinion of course. Smiler

The woman I love exhibits the following behaviour. She mean as possible, aggressive when provoked, kindhearted to a fault, loveing when I'm good, always indepentant, happy and for the gladness part that would be me , because the girl in the avatar ain't got nothing on mine.

She is all woman so I showed her the avatar and she said it was impressive.

I must convey a funny story about Fjolds avatar. My wife favors the lady in the avatar quite a bit. No kidding. She was a model and is well endowed. One night I was surfing the AR forums and had my 3 year old daughter on my lap when Fjold's avatar popped up. No sooner had I scrolled to it when my daughter piped up and said, "Mommy". I had to summon the wife and she even got a big kick out of it. Sorry to hijack the thread but I think it had already happened!

I agree with Fish30114. Frank's avatar is a AR staple and AR wouldn't be the same without her/them Big Grin

IMO we don't need a pissers match over an avatar like Franks. The 45-70 debates or Match King threads do nicely Wink
