I scored some Hornady 35 caliber 275 grain bullets today on GB. I know they have been off the market for several years. Of those who may have used them what powders did you find performed the best? I would think 4320 or RL15 as they both handle the 250 grain bullets well. Thanks for any advice. Mart "...I advise the gun. The colonel’s favorite loads for that rifle were 61.0 grains of IMR-4350 behind the Hornady 275-grain bullet and 60.0 grains of the same powder with the Barnes 300-grain bullet (neither bullet is now in production). Respective velocities were 2,375 and 2,350 fps. Paco Kelly list a load for Nosler 275 gr jacketed bullet with a max of 52.0 gr of H335 @ 2455 fps but I would work up that with caution. I too grabbed a box of these a couple of years ago but have never loaded them nor will I now. I only shoot 280 cast in the old springfield now. Let me know if you can use another box and we will work something out. Just lookin' thru my old Hodgdon #25 manual. They don't list the 275 for the Whelen, but do list it for the 350 Rem. They are similar in case capacity. Most would say the 350 is a short action Whelen. That said, it looks like H380, BL-C(2) and H335 will give you the highest speeds. So stick powders in that relative burn rate should work well too (as others have mentioned).

I got over 2400 fps with Hawk 275 gr bullets in my 35 Whelen AI using Alliant Power Pro 2000-MR. It has the burn rate of RL-15, but is spherical, so better loading density. Great stuff.

I have an original Hornady manual published in 1967 that has loads for their 275gr in the 35 Whelen. PM me and I will send you the data. Realize that these were with 1960s vintage powders and before Hornady probably had pressure testing equipment. Barstooler
