Has anyone here ever experienced with heavy bullets such as 160gr, 165gr, 170gr and 180gr in their .270 Win's?? How's performance, velocity, accuracy, etc. These bullets should be great if you can get them to stabilize!!

This might not be much help but I have met guys that use to use them back in the 70's and liked them but availability is what killed the enthusiasm. I know the the 160gr. Nosler Partition is about the only one I can find for over 150 gr. mark.

I don't know if they were a long rnage type of bullet but all I know is that one man I met loved 180's out of his 270 combined with Timber hunting.

Thats all I know.

Thats the heavest bullet for the 270 that I know of now, The 160gr bullet. I don't bother with it in my 270. The heavest I shoot is the 150 gr bullet. If I need the 160 gr bullet I would use a different rifle.

My 150 I got up to 2910 fps with a 22" barrel.

I used a heavy barnes bullet many years ago in a Remington pump. As I recall it was 170 or 180 grains and was a roundnose. It stabilized nicely but I never shot anything with it.
The 160 Partition is the bullet I'd use in the 270 today to hunt elk and other big game but as has been noted...if you have a bigger gun you'd be well advised to use it.

The 1-10 twist on 99% of .270 rifles today handle the 160 fine.

I've not worked with anything heavier than the 160 Noz, that has been a very accurate bullet for me and works very well on game.

I couple it with R22 for what that is worth.

I highly recommend the 160 grain SMP partition...That and the 220 grain SMP are the only two bullets that have the SMP configuration which is what the partitions originally had... I still think it is the best design for on game performance.. but everyone wants a Spitzer...

Speer also use to put out a 170 grain Round Nose for the 270 bore....I have seen a few old boxes floating around... like any round nose, they didn't sell well enough, so they quit manufacturing them....

Once again, based on everyone's desires for "long range" hunting and shots... which I think of as a crock of BS myself....If ya can't get within 250 to 300 yds, and make the shot.... well take up golf.....

If nothing else I wish the manufacturers would make production runs every couple of years for the old discontinued bullets.... that hunters liked.. and Walmart supplied hunters... or guys that think they need "premium" everything... didn't seem to like....

I still have a box of those old Speer 170's. Someday I'm gonna load em up and see how they shoot. Should be a good elk bullet. Their pretty long, but the 700's magazine length will handle them fine. BT53

The only heavy .270 bullets I am aware of right now is the 160 Nosler Partion and the 165 Hawk bullet. Speer used to make a 170 RN and Barnes made 160 SP & 180 RN. I have loaded the 180 Barnes and got decent accuracy at right around 2700 fps. The 160 Noslers were very accurate at ~2850 fps. I have never hunted with either, but was curious so loaded some up. I still have some 170 Speers on hand that I may load up for hogs someday.

I always thought the 150gr is plenty heavy for anything that should be shot with a .270 win

I have used both the Nosler 160-grain and the old Speer 170 grain RN in my Mann./Schoen (1/9" twist). Both worked fine.

The load I used for the 170-grain was 54 grains of old surplus H4831 powder. The 160 Nosler Partition used 52 grains of IMR 4350.
