I looked at a push feed featherweight 30-06 at the athens pawn shop in athens texas, and he wanted $600.00 for it. It had featherweidht in script on the barrel and looked like it came out of the box. Nice wood. I was tempted.

However in the pawn shop in Georgetown Texas there was a model 70 ranger with the same metal except it has a birch or maple stock. It was $419. But the problem was that when I got back to Georgetown (hurricane relatives) he was having a sale and the ranger was $319 and it has a scope. After the examination at home and disassembly and oiling it appears not to have a scratch on it, and a really good trigger. And it feeds fine. If you got the impression it now lives with me your are correct. I might want to paint the stock, but it is actually growing on me. Does anyone know what kind of wood the stock is made of? My first impression is birch.

And I'd agree. I have two that I bought for $299 each and they are excellent guns.

yep, birch. It might show dings and scratches a little quicker than walnut, but if you are not picky about that, it will shoot just as well.

Birch. You got a pretty good deal. 600.00 is a bit pricey, I mean there are NIB M70's still on some shelves going for 600 or less. Besides if the stock ends up not to your liking down the road...you can always put another one on.

IMO, super fancy walnut stocks with high gloss finishes are for display guns, everything else are for true huntin' guns. Are you gonna feel bad if that birch stock gets banged up? My guess is no Big Grin

I have two of the M70 push feed Featherweights and I'd have jumped on that 06 as well. That stock design just seems to fit me to perfection.
Mine are in .257 Bob and 7x57 Mauser. Cool

I took it to the range today. Groups 1.75 inches with federal fusion 165 grain. However the scope is hinky. When you adjust it left it also goes down or up. A bushnell of dubious quality or just broken. Got more cheap scopes to try. Somebody put a recoil pad on it without adjusting the length of pull. Going to gunsmith to get it back to 13.5 inches and another recoil pad. Might try it myself. The birch is growing on me.

Shot up all the federal fusion, and I have better luck with Winchester power point. More reports later, but I am pleased.

I just picked up a model 70 pushfeed xtr sporter magnum w/what I think is the mcmillan stock(blind magazine) on it for 289 dollars. I've only put some federal blue box 150's thru it so far but things do look good. Its in 7mm Remington Mag. I think there are some good deals on the pushfeeds out there and I like what I see so far. This all coming from a remington fan. You got a winner there mike.

If you got a M70 with a Mac stock for $289...well, did you have your 38 Special in your hand (pointed at the clerk) when you walked out the door?

Congrats!

NO, I don't think he did. i have two M70 push feeders, one a special model made for Walmart in .300 Win. mag. that sold new for $350 with a a genuine McMillan stock and a POS Simmons scope. I replaced the scope and that gun is amazingly accurate with nothing so far grouping larger than .75", either with factory ammo or handloads. The only change to the stock was I replaced the Rock of Gibralter they claimed was a recoil pad with a Pachmeyr Decelerator.
The other was an XTR with a McMillan stock shaped like the Featherweight stock in .270 Win. Like the cheaie walmart special, nothing in this rifle has grouped over .75" and Winchester 150 gr. Powerpoints shoot one very tiny ragged hole slightly less that .375" outside to outside.
On the other hand, I also bought an M70 Stainless Classic in .338 Win. mag. that is the most overpriced POS I've ever owned. here is a rifle that retailed for a bit more than a grand when you included sales tax and it has the most crappy piece of Tupeprware for a stock I've ever seen. It is so bad that it makes a Ramline stock look like high quality.
I think Winchester did have some kind of a deal with McMillan for synthetic stocks and they work quite well, although I find them a bit too heavy for serious work at high altitude. Just getting too darn old to enjoy heavy rifles.
I also have a nice 98 Mauser in a McMillan stock that I bought well before the prices got so high.

LOL no hold up here. I think they didn't know what it was plus it had been on the rack for months. They had a big sale and dropped the price to 280 dollars. Thats when I started asking questions and bought the rifle.

Mine is like the 300 win mag paul described. I wish it were a 270 win but I like the 7 mag too. The recoil pad is real hard and if I remember right it weighed 7.2 lbs without a scope.

My old man shoots a M70 Ranger in .30-06, decent gun. Pretty sure it is a birch stock. His picked up a few dings but that's what it was made for. It's a good shooter.

Does anyone know where I can get a front sight for the topic mentioned pushfeed. It is missing the front sight, and I like the front sight on a rifle.

Looks really good in a featherweight stock. I have a 6x redfield that is going on it for the next range session.

Brownell's and Midway both have a variety of front sight blades. I assume it is the standard dovetail type.

I need the ramp and the sight. I can probably find one to fit. I am looking forward to the next range session with the redfield scope. If that scope is hinky I can take a burris fullfield off another rifle.

All my model 70 classics are early or middle 1990's (as best I remember) and all shoot well. The best one is a .280 featherweight. At least equal to it is a .270 featherweight that is stainless in a wood stock. I looked and looked and never found a 30-06 stainless in a wood stock. I found a .270 with a much better stock, but didn't buy it. Regret that, but I am pleased with the pushfeed.

I did have a .338 that I put a williams steel triggerguard on and had the barrel cut to 23 inches. I got tired of the recoil and got too old to go elk hunting. Didn't really regreat selling that one.

Had a 30-06 classic super grade. Went I went insane one day I sold it. Guy gave me a lot of green but I wish I had it back. I also had a .375 super express. I also went insane and sold that rifle, but I really didn't need it anymore.

The problem is I have more damn guns that I will every be able to buy ammo for.

My pushfeed ranger in .30-06 will easily shoot MOA. Best deal I ever got on a rifle.

The pawn shop had two more pushfeeds on sale. One had a blind magazine and was a .308, and I don't know what the other was. I went back this morning to get the exact descriptions for people that might be in the Austin Texas area, and they sold the same day I bought mine.

Curious, do the push feed Winchesters have the same basic two lever type trigger that the Win CRF rifles do?

Plain ol boot polish. Thats what I put on the birch stock I once had. You can laugh, but after about four applications, it looked like a good but old piece of walnut. Another trick is to use artist grade linseed oil and put a little Indian Red oil paint in the mix, slightly browning the oil. After a few aplications, it looks like grandads rifle.
Well, if you want it to look antique, go for it.

I took off the stock to take it to the gunsmith to get it back to 13.5 inch pull (it was 14.5 due to installation of recoil pad). Get a new pad and shorten the stock.

The screws were tightened in the wrong order. The rear guard screw was very tight, and the outer screws were nearly loose. So when I get it back that might make some difference.

I mentioned to the gunsmith that I wanted a front sight for the rifle, and he said to bring the barrel when I come to pick up the stock. He has about 200 front sights in a drawer that he has taken off rifles over the years.

That often happens with a scope is adjusted to near the end of its limits. If you have windage adjustable mounts you can likely correct it.

The ranger is back from the gunsmith, and it has a new recoil pad, and a real winchester front sight. It is a real beauty. Now to put another scope on it and find time to shoot. The birch stock is growning on me. The metal is just about 100 percent. Stock is too. I don't need one of the new featherweights now.

Yes I have a friend who has a featherweight in 7x57 and another in 6.5x55. I am truly envious and both rifles are on my scarfe up list if found on the used gun rack and all other conditions are right.
