I received my 9.3x62 a little over a week ago after going back to Ruger to replace the sear and spring. Fit and finish is the same as the other limited edition African's.

I had been wanting to try Alaska Arms QD rings, so I ordered a pair for this rifle. Mounted a VX5 2-10x42 with Leupold flip up lens covers.

I am not much of a photographer so, please forgive me for these pictures.

After getting on paper at 50 yards, I moved to 100 and got this group with PPU factory 285 gr ammo.

The other load I tried was Norma 286 gr. I'm not sure what happened with the first shot, maybe I pulled it? For the last shot, I removed and reinstalled the scope and #4 fell right in with #2 and 3.

This rifle is light and recoil is rather snappy!

Fine rifle and excellent caliber. Prvi ammo is listed as a 285gr at 2263 fps MV, and the Norma load is a 286gr AF at 2362 fps MV. Plenty smack down.

Handloading should provide improved accuracy. As well as higher muzzle speeds if so desired. Triggers are easily improved on these rifles.

I've not had particularly good accuracy with the Prvi in this caliber, although I have in 6.5x55.

Cj,

Congrats on getting your rifle back and shooting it.

It’s a great lightweight little 9.3 isn’t it?

I’m mounting a Leupold 1.5-5 or a 2.5-8 on mine this week.

Nice rifle. I really like the elegant simple classic lines.

Good groups too.

Have I corresponded with you before about loads, articles etc. on 9.3X62. If not, PM me with email and I can send you a lot of fun information on this great caliber.

Every AFrican mod Ive owned, and that is many, most sold on AR as I recall, and they have all shot pin holes in the one inch category..

I consider them the best thing since sliced white bread and the pre 64 mod.70!! The full equal to the Mauser 98..form a huntng standpoint.

4sixteen,

I most likely won't handload for this caliber. I haven't checked what the weight of pull is for the trigger but, it seems fine to me.

Surefire7,

It's lightweight alright, mine kicks the snot out of me! Maybe I'm not holding it correctly. Don't know when I will shoot it again.

Nakihunter,

I will send you a PM.

Atkinson,

I wholeheartedly agree with your last comment.

Perhaps a more recoil absorbing pad would help. Sometimes those solid ones can be a little harsh. Not that a 9.3x62 has much sting, it's more of a shove but every little bit helps sometimes especially shooting from the bench.

Except for very small caliber rifles, I always put Decelerator 1” pads on mine. That was the first thing I did to my Ruger African 9.3x62.

Like the 7x57, 8x57, the 9.3x62 is loaded to low level pressure, loaded up to the capabilities of a ruger 77 at 55,000 to 60,000 Psi its a totally different rifle caliber and an awesome killer of all big game..including elephant and buffalo, but with solids slow velocity isn't bad at all..but expanding bullets need some speed. The factory 9.3x62 are at 30-30 levels and less..

I would expect to get an easy 2400 plus with a 300 gr. bullet in a good 9.3x62 and 2550 with a 286 gr.

Factory 9.3x62 loaded to 30-30 level ? On what planet ?

I shoot RWS factory 293's @ 2400 fps,
PMP does 2360 fps on their 286 gr in Pro Am
Norma Oryx (320 gr) will do 2200 fps and this all within the CIP pressure limit of 56,500 psi.
The lowest of the lowest in factory 9.3 x 62's goes to Privi and even that will run circles around a 30-30 !

I think Ray was referring to velocity and pressure level, not actual killing power.

The 30-30 I shoot sends a 170 gr. bullet out the tube at 2250 and a 150 at 2350, the same as you quote for the 286 in a factory loaded 9.3x62, and if you read my other posts I handload a 286 at near 2500 fps. I was referring to some factory loaded 9.3x62s lack of velocity, Alfred!!
