pineappleNeed help with CZ527,
Howzit all, Just recieved a CZ527(7.62x39) last week. Bought it for my son. His first hunting rifle. A set of Talley rings(low) came in today. After mounting the Leupold 1.75x6 on it, I attempted to cycle the bolt. The bolt handle caught on the scope's rear objective bell. I was wondering how other shooters solved this problem with low mounts. I read that someone ground the bolt handle to clear the bell but wondered about the strength of the bolt handle after the modification. The easiest would be to exchange the rings for med. but am afraid my son would lose his cheek weld. I'd hate to have to resort to duct tape and cardboard to build up the stock Any suggestions would greatly be apreciated. Mahalo, Maika

rifleman1I would suggest that you find another set of rings - I like mine low too but in cases where I have had to go to a medium height ring I learn fast enough where to position my cheek - we are speaking of a fraction of an inch here - grinding a bolt scares me, not knowing how much metal has to be removed, but maybe someone from the gunsmith crowd could answer that better. Interesting to know that about the CZ though. Also, another manufacturer's low ring might just be high enough - I know on Midway's site they specify the height of most of the rings they sell. Good luck

papaschmudthe other thing you might consider is switching scopes. the leupold VX III series does have a somewhat large ocular bell which aggravates this situation. you MAY be able to fit one of leupold's 2-7 compacts in those rings without modification. it will cost you a little something in light transmission but it may fit as that rear lense is substantially smaller.

Art S.You may find that going to a non-variable makes a difference too. I ran into this on a large bore the other day.

rifleman1Checked out some of the suggestions here. The scope you have now has an occular dia of 42mm. The 2-7 compact and 2.5-8 Leupolds have an occular dia of 36mm - so just maybe a reduction of 3mm (radius) will allow the bolt to function without interference.

pineappleThanks for all the replies! I've decided to exchange the rings and get the med. ht. ones. Grinding the bolt down didn't sit well with me either. I'll proberbly cut the comb and add spacers for proper stock weld. Went to the Leupold website and found that most of the scopes that I was interested in, had the same rear eyepiece dia. about 1.55 inches.(wouldn't clear bolt handle with low mount). The only one that I think might work is the VX II lx4x20. Eyepiece dia. is l inch. Mahalo again for the ideas, Maika
The Leupold 2-7X Compact will work fine with the low Talley rings. That is the setup I have on my 527.

pineappleThanks Ed, the Leupold compact is on order. I considered that scope but was afraid the rear eyepiece dia.(1.33) wouldn't clear the bolt. Glad to see that it does. Again thanks everybody for your input. Aloha, Maika

the 1.75-6 and the 2.5-8 leupold have the same size ocular lens. the 2.5-8 won't help at all. the 2-7 compact by contrast has a 28 mm ocular, it will help as Ed has said.

the 1-4 would not help you either. no you're not crazy though, leupold has the wrong specs. listed on their website. that scope like all the other VXI's, VXII's, and VXIII's has a 1.6" ocular lens. leupold just screwed up their data on the website. the scope that can help you though is that 2-7 compact that i mentioned. it has a 1.36" ocular lens and as Ed can attest, it will work.
BTW have a great time with that 7.62X39 it's a great killer if you keep the ranges modest.

pineappleThanks for the heads up Papashmud. Was just thinking about ordering that scope this morning. Didn't feel comfortable with a 20mm front objective. Thought of giving it a day or two and if no replies, order it. Glad I waited. Mahalo, Maika
By the way, my boys and I used our 527 in 7.62x39 this past season to cull a number of whitetail does and hogs on a friends' ranch. Worked like a charm using cheapo ($45/500) Wolf 122 gr copper jacketed hollowpoints. All one shot kills to boot. A great little rifle IMO.
