I would like to ask those who use this rifle in Ultra MAgnum calibers, how is shooting and how that new type stainless steel works.

My friend seeing what my Rem700 LSS can do in .300RUM (killed moose at 480 yr) decided to buy one and ask me for opinion on XCR.

What do you think?

Thanks

Peter

According to the remington website the new corrosion system is coating that goes over the stainless rather than being a new stainless steel.

Stubby,
Russell has got them priced pretty nice and for me they look great. I am big time Remington fun, however they new and I tend to wait bit before I buy a new realesed product.

Thanks

Pete

It's not like the design is new,it is the same 700 action with a coating and a different stock.

Holey smokes that is some shot (480 yards) what are you shooting for ammo? What is your rifle zeroed for? I am interested in the 300rum for long range shooting any info that you could provide would be a big help. Wow 480 yards the 300 rum might just be the ticket i was looking for.

Thanks in advance

I have two 300ultramags myself. The 300ultramag will certainly kill a moose at 480 yards,in fact much farther if you can place the bullet properly.Therein lies the problem. There are many more long range guns than long range shooters. Most prople are not willing to spend the time and money necessary to practise at long ranges in order to develop and maintain the shooting skills necessary to accurate place bullets at over 400 yards. In fact many people do not have acess to a 500 yard shooting range in order to learn the actual trajectory of their load and to practise at longer ranges. As far as the 300ultramag is concerned, the factory loads are extremely mild and in fact don't offer much advantage over a 300winmag.Only with handloading does this cartridge take advantage of it's case capacity.Remember also that barrel life is not overly long so if you only have one rifle to practise with, you will be looking at rebarrelling in a few years. The reason for this post is that I have seen many people run out and buy ultramags thinking that owning a long range cartridge would make them a long range shooter.Unfortunately ,it just doesn't work that way.

I have a rem 700 PSS .300 RUM with MK 4 6.5-20x50 leupold in badger rings and base, my longest shot so far is 439 yards, I am only around 50 shots into my relationship with the .300 RUM but have killed over 20 animals with it 7 or 8 where around 200 yards the rest at around 300-350 yards, bar my long shot, I have a lot of learning to do with this round and hope to crack the 500 yard mark on vermin type animals in the near future, it is a fun gun for sure ! !!

Thanks for the advice I am looking towards something that will be flat enough for long range target work out to 1000. I have access to 2 ranges on private land one to 200 and one to 800. I reload so better ammo should not be a problem.I have an 06 for hunting and it does all that I could ever ask of it at hunting ranges ( less that 300 yards ). Sorry for not being more clear on my intended usage.

I agree with Stubby,

practice makes the kill.
I reload my own ammo, and I use 200gr Nosler ABond bullets behind AA3100-86grain of powder with Federal 215 primer and Rem brass. Bullet is set 3.6770" OCL OR 3.0450" to the ogive.

Last year I took a cow at 365 year shooting with 3x magnification from my Zeiss scope, and I tought it was a luck, but this year when I got her again at longer distance, I was very happy.
My first shot was a miss, but second striked right into the shoulders killing quick.

I would say any RUM will do well at longer range, if we willing to spend some time practising and modyfing the rile bit, like improving the trigger, better scope, and so on.

My own rifles are customs built on 700 stainless actions with macmillan stocks and 26" barrels by pac-nor and gaillard.I am using medium varmint barrel contours(.750" at the muzzle) which provides a muzzle heavy balance and a bare rifle weight of about 8lbs.The result is that these rifles are much more pleasant to shoot than the factory 300ultramags that I have fired.I am using the 180gr tsx driven at 3360fps to 3380fps in both rifles and groups with both rifles average 5/8" at 100 yards. So far my total count with these rifles is 9 elk and 2 moose. Most dropped at the shot or within a few yards and not one has covered 50 yards after being hit.I am extremely happy with the cartridge but unfortunately I have seen many people show up at the range with 300ultramags,fire a few shots, and then declare that any game animal that they see is dead meat. Most of these guys never even fire their guns past 100 yards or ever bother to practise but they don't hesitate to shoot at any game animal reguardless of the range.
