I did not know the 32 Winchester Spl. was an 8 mm. thanks.
one of us |
The origional 8mm mauser (and a several others) used a .318 bullet, the most common 8mm's (including the later 8mm mauser) use a .323 bullet, the 8x50R Austrian/Hungrian and the 8x56R A/H use a .329 bullet. As the 32Win Spl uses a .321 bullet (as do both of the Siamese 8mm's) I included it in this listing. CTOW lists named 8mm cartridges with bullets from .316 to .329 [ 05-28-2002, 20:24: Message edited by: Tailgunner ]

Hit by the wildcat bug I developed my own huckleberry, the 8MM MAZON. It is based on the 9,3x64 Brenneke case necked down to 8mmS or .323". It has the capacity of the 2.5" magnums, does not carry a belt, and fits and feeds perfectly in the 1909 Mauser Argentino action which I used, altogether with a Lothar Walther barrel. montero

Tailgunner, you missed some chamberings with "S" added. Fine list, though. 8x68S Only in "S" bore. Bigger case capacity than 9.3x64 or belted H & H Magnum case ( of same lenght ). No belt. Smooooth feeding. Fits in standard Mauser, as it was designed for that system. Lots of Military 8s in rimmed or rimless form. A popular caliber. Have fun! Hermann

Ahunter, where does one find a pre made magazine box long enough for the 68s? I think it is over by, I forget how much, think it was at least .30 if not more, beyond the out side my box. Later,, Mauserkid...

Beg to differ on the 8x68. That case is right at 2.7" long, according to my references. While it COULD be fitted into a 3.3" magazine box, this would require even deeper seating than the shorter .300 Winchester (which is much more versitile in the full length box). I wouldn't be comfortable with an 8x68 in less than a 3.5 to 3.6" box.

quote:Allow me to be nitpicky: the 8 x 50 R Austrian always used a .323 bullet, to my knowledge; it relied on obturation fit to conform to the bore. The 8 x 50 R Lebel only used a .323" bullet in its very rare first variant, the round-nosed Balle M (employed up to 1898). The later Balle D and the most common Balle N from 1932 had larger diameters (Balle N had 8,32 mms, don't know about Balle D right now, maybe 8,28 or 8,30). Le me add two machine gun cartridges: 8 x 57 R Dutch (scherpe patroon No. 23) 8 x 61 Norvegian Best regards, Carcano carcano91@hotmail.com

The 8x50R Austrian may be reloaded with standard .323 bullets. Regrettably most of those sleek 95 carbines were redone to 8x56R Hungarian, which uses .329 bullets. There were some privately converted to 8x57 IRS, I would like to have one! The 6.5x68 and the 8x68S were designed for the standard Mauser action from 1935 to 40. So they should fit in any, perhaps with some filing on the rear of the mag box. FWIW, Hermann

I am thinking the last time I got the total over all length of the 68s, it was longer than the magwell of my standard Mausers. I think the 68s protruded beyond by I want to say at least .030 or more. At least on my VZ's an Turks. So, if there is a mag well out there longer, could some one let me know what and were to get one? Thanks Mauserkid...

Mauserkid, the men to talk to are JBelk or Ray Atkinson. There are enough knowledgeable people there, but these should know. H

A couple other 8mm's are the 8mm Hollis which is a 308 Norma necked up to 323 and the 8mm PMM (poor mans magnum)which is the 338 Win necked down. Both of these are comparable to the 8x68 and very close to the 8mm Rem
