Anyone familiar with the Sig Sauer take down rifles either the 202 or 205 model? I am looking for a new toy and these intrigue me but I have no first hand experience with them.

Mike,

For what its worth, they are very well thought of as "high end" stalking rifles here in the UK. My friend is looking for a left hander in 6.5x55mm as we speak. The bolt locks up directly into the barrel as opposed to the action and this makes them very strong. Still I think I would prefer the steel actioned one as oppposed to the alloy version, but thats just me being old fashioned!

Regards,

Peter

My regular Roedeer stalking rifle is a much appreciated 202 in 7x64 (NB.: it has collected Red, Fallow and Muntjac as well). Accuracy with selected hunting loads was around .5 MOA (5 shots), out-of-the-box. Barrel switch is easy (only 2 bolts to tighten at 7Nm) but, unlike the Blaser R93, limited by ctg. size (NB. : no sweat). Trigger and ergonomics are superb and you won't regret it.

BTW, these groups come from different loads and bullets (all hunting type)

It was a while ago when I looked but I think I'm right in saying that the safety operates by pushing a button on the tang for safe and pushing a button inside the trigger guard just ahead of the trigger for fire (or maybe vice versa)

I'll grant that it's silent but I am very wary of any safety that requires movement inside of the trigger guard, coupled with a set trigger and gloves it seems lunacy to me.

Apologies if I'm wrong.

That's exactly where the safety is, 1894. Never had any problem though, although I'm constantly switching rifles, according to weather or mood. In fact, it's the same when I take my wife's car (manual gearbox), coming from my automatic ; my mind makes the "switch" at once and I don't even notice the change. Agreed, that's me and what about the others. Well, thinking of it, I fail to see the danger ? First and unless you're ready to fire, your finger has no business whatsoever inside the trigger guard, no matter the safety system. On the 202, you press the safety ON with your thumb, above and away from fire controls and going to FIRE mode, mobilizes your shooting finger, pushing UP and AWAY from the trigger. Like all set-triggers and this one is no exception, they're all meant for "surgical" conditions in experienced hands (ever seen a surgeon operate with mittens ?). BTW, mine is set "dangerously" light BUT I'm not forced to use it, as the regular pull is a very clean 2,5 lbs. Also, going to SAFE (thumb, remember) uncocks the set-trigger, as does lifting the bolt.

PS
If I send this page to Sauer, do you think I'd qualify for a substantial discount on my next buy ? [Big Grin] Of course, I love this rifle, but with reasons too.

Mike, do not even touch a Sauer 202!!!

You will be forever spoiled and every Remchester you own will be for sale.

The 202 is without a doubt the finest factory rifle I have ever seen. The way it fits the shooter (me) is almost magical. It has a slight palm swell that really enhances the feel and handling.

I enjoy the 202 Lux in 6.5x55, 270, 30-06 and 375HH. Also a lightweight synthetic version in 30-06. I have a 9.3x62 ordered and am looking around for something to sell so I can get a 22-250 varmint rig.

If there is a better factory rifle made, I am not aware of it. (but that's just my opinion) [Big Grin]

ps. none of my 202s have the set trigger. I believe that is only offered in Europe???

You hit it on the head Elmo. I have been looking at them anyway, but now I guess I have my excuse.
Thanks for all the quick answers guys. Elmo, have you had the 376 out to play lately?
As to the Sig what are the limits on caliber interchange? I guess I am asking what the range is that I could change to in one gun. I hope that makes sense. Alf, That is a nice looking setup. I feel myself weakening. What is the normal retail on these?

In Belgium, my Europa Lux (U.S. Supreme) sells for 2395 in std. cal. For magnum chamberings, add 175 .
Bbl. switch range is dictated by bolt/case head & length.
Std.= 6,5x55 - 6,5x57 - 7x64 - 9,3x62 - .243 Win -.25-06 - .270 Win - .30-06 - .308 Win.
Mag. = 6,5x68 - 8x68S - 7 RM - .300 Win - .300 Weath - .375 HH.
There may other cal. added lately.

Just a quick check of Gunsamerica.com shows 202s (standards, syntetics, and supremes) go from $1100 to $1350, new in the box.

Significantly less than the 2395 Euros Andre is quoting. Seems we get a better deal than Europe on a European rifle this time......

Alf, my 202 magazine is all steel.

KSduckhunter, this comes as no surprise. That European weapons, optics, etc. are much cheaper in the U.S. is a known fact. Marketeers consider that the psychological price threshold is much lower at your side of the pond and that hunting in Europe being already very much more expensive, our hunters won't bitch (no choice, actually...). We therefore are making up for their lesser markup on U.S. exports. OTOH, U.S. products are heavily taxed. E.g. a Rem 700 VLS in .308 Win sells for 1.229 and a Weatherby Accumark for 2.399 .

Thanks again for all the quick answers. There is something wrong when you have to pay double for a rifle made in your own backyard. I never will understand marketing types. Looks like I have to make a couple phone calls today.

I have a Sauer 90 in .222 in South Africa at my disposal. I shoots very, very well. It is my culling rifle. At the shop we sell some sauers, I fell they are overlooked.

Cheers, Aleko

One more question for you guys. How readily available are the different barrels and what kind of price range can I expect?
Thanks again
Mike
