I have a Rem 700 in 30-06. I am tired of the 30-06 and want to turn it into something special. What cartridge do you think would be a good choice to fill in my gaps. I have the following:

6.5x55 (2)
7mm-08 (1)
300WSM (2)
9.3x62 (1)
7.62x39 (1)
221 Rem Fireball (1)
30-06 (1)

I also handload for all my rifles.

Thanks.

338-06 would fit in nicely with the others you have, my other choice would be a .280. You can pretty much use the same powders for the .338-06 as your 9.3x62. I'm like you, the '06 is great, but boring.

280 Ackley.

Course I'm probably prejudiced right now cause I just got a rebarrel in that caliber back from Hart. It does fit in a gap in your calibers there.

They have a lot of dies now for the 280AI and Nosler even sells brass.

You've got the bases covered pretty well with the exception of 22 to 25 cal. However you don't say what it is that you want to do.

If it were I would sell both the 300s; any the 06 isn't able to do the 9.3 will do very well. Maybe a 6.5x06 or a 25 Roy to hotrod.

Thanks, I am leaning real hard towards the 338-06. The 6.5-06 would be nice, but I don't see much advantage over the 6.5x55.
Sorry CARNE, selling my 300's is not an option. The 30 cal that will be leaving is the 06.

Say steve4102, Have you ever used puflon in your reloads? I use it in my 8/300wimmag and my 300winmag. It's a filler soyou can down size your load for different targets. Dave p.s. as for another one to build 338-06 would be my choice.

You have all the small bore gaps covered Sell the 30-06 and get a 458 Win Mag.
You can load it from standard 45/70 power levels, up through high performance 45/70 levels to full power 458.

You can have a lot of fun with a big bore.

With the rifle being a long action... a 6mm Rem, with a one in 8 twist jumped right out at me!

I have a couple... with a 75 grain HP... you can get about 3700 fps with H 414.... which makes it quite a long range varmint round.. and it is accurate as hell...

With the 115 grain Berger match bullets, with 46 grains of RL 19, I am getting 3250 fps out of the muzzle on that one.. and once again, very accurate...

Longer barrel life than the 243 also...

on a long action, it will match factory 240 Weatherby loads any day....

25-06 or 458 win mag. 25-06 will shoot farther than your 22, with light recoil.
mine is my current favorite.

You have the mediums covered pretty well, so the next step is the 458. The 45-70 loads were a good idea. you can get cheap 45-70 bullets, and shoot it a bunch for not much money.

If you want to sell the rifle, I think you are light on the 22's. Everyone needs a 223. Maybe even an ar-15?

Maybe you need a different 30-06? With a 6.5*55 and 7.62*39, maybe you like milsurps? I told myself I woundn't buy a 30-06 unless I found it in a military rifle designed for it. That left M-1 Garand, 1917, 1903, and 1903a3. I found a nice 1903 sporter and I love it. Who doesn't like a Garand?

DEFINATELY a 25-06 improved or .257 Hawk. You have plenty at the other end. With the 9.3 and the WSM the .338 becomes an exercise in redunacy. You are missing the small stuff. The lightest 26" tube you can find will push 110 Accubonds 3400 and change. Long and flat for "lite" big game - deer and speed goats!
