What is your favorite 7?

Since your not positive what you want I would let the rifle choose the cartridge. This is how most of us end up with this round or the other.

As I got older I wanted a lighter rifle so when its steep going I carry a Kimber in 308 and I got my son a 84M in 7-08.

Don't over worry it. If you handload then a larger round can be loaded down some.

My current gun nut passion with the 7mm bore is the Berger 168 gr VLD bullet. I am shooting it out of a M70 Classic in 7mm WSM. Good luck to you and tell us what you chose.

I don't think you can go past the mighty 7 x 57 with the heavier weight projectiles - it is a great killer and most of the later 7mm cartridges don't offer any huge advantage over it, in my opinion.

7mm08 is my personal favorite. ...And I've switched to the 140 gr. Rem. Managed recoil. It's still perfectly adequate for the deer I'm after.

I have both the .280 and 7mm-08 and like both very much. If forced to choose, I would go with the .280, due to its slightly better ability to handle heavier .284 bullets if needed.

I have and love my 7x57 Remington Rolling block. I use 175gr soft RN and 195gr RN solids. Never over 2500fps.

A 7mm-08 with a good premium 140 gr. bullet will take just about anything on the NA continent. No big bears...

My favorite 7mm is the Rem 7mm. I have a 26" barrel on it. I shot a wild bore with it so far.

if you didn't care for the 7's before, why start now. seems you already have all the bases covered. i'd save the money and put it toward a hunt. the 270 (which you said you liked) can handle the gun chores.

The 7-08 hands down. Can be had in a short action, light weight rifle, and with 140 gr. triple shocks will take anything in N. A. Even a big Bear with a well placed shot. My M84 would be THE last rifle to go if it came to had to.

I have the following:

Remington M-7 in 7mm-08.
TC Encore Pro-Hunter in 280 Remington.
Remington (1970's) M-700 BDL in 7mm Rem Mag.

My all-round favorite is my 7 Mag., but I've only used the Pro-Hunter one season. I wouldn't be to surprised if the PH becomes my number one "go to" rifle.

I actually have a 7-30, 3 7x57's, 2 280's & 3 7 Rem mags. The 7x30 is in a 21" ss bbl with a Laminated stock. It is a great deer/hog size gun & with 100 gr HPTS a fine dog/ summer carry rifle. On the down side you can't get a heavier than 140 gr bullet to go fast enough to work at over 200 yds. The T/c carbine is a great fun gun & if you are looking for a toy get 1. My 7x57's are built on lomg actions & will throw a 160 gr bullet fast enough to work. If you want a good working soft skin rifle it's the way to go. I'd pass the 280 for a 270 or '06. The 7 mag. is a fine rifle if you want to go up to Elk size game. I hunt with all 3, for mid size you can call them babby, moma, & pappa bear.

I'll take my turn..I own a 7-08 in the Kimber clasic and a 7 Rem Mag in a Weatherby and will almost always take the 0/8 with me every time.

I have a hard time making up my mind. I love the .280 Remington, and I doubt that I'll ever be without one in my safe. However, I have hunted more with a 7 mm Remington Magnum throughout the years, and I would not part with my Model 70 Featherweight. On the other hand, I hunted all last year with a Model 70 7mm WSM, and I was truly impressed with the calibre. I suppose that my favourite is whichever one I'm hunting with at the moment.

I had a fantastic hunt in Zim in 98 and the RSA in 95 with a 7mmSTW, so have to vote for it as #1.

I'm kinda interested in the 7mmSAUM as well; as someone said like a SA 280AI.

And for sheer dragster power, the 7mmRUM. The Ferrari of 7mm's

Combine it with a 12g in a decent BBF or Drilling and you have pretty much everything (big or dangerous critters excepted) covered.

I get the impression that the deer hunters love the 7-08 and those that might hunt larger game prefer the 7x57, and both rounds do much better with handloads than with factory ammo, especially the 7x57 which will leave the 7-08 in the dust handloaded...

Both are great cartridges but the 7-08 has a limited powder capacity so its best with 140 and under bullet weights, whereas the 7x57 does quite well with 160 to 175 gr. bullets..

My personal choice is a 7x57 with a long throat and long magazine and with that addition I can give the .280 a run for its money and duplicate the 7 mm Rem Mag. in factory persuasion..

.280 is my favotire.

However, having said that I'm suprised of all the wsm that the 7mm is the least favorite and looks to go about extinct....Just looking at them I thought it would be head and shoulders above the .270wsm.

The 7x57 brings nostalgia with it, and once that is forgotten, its effectiveness on game will amaze you. All said and done, it is about bullet performance that is related to impact velocity that a bullet can withstand. And that is why the 7x57 is such a big surprise to many people missing this vital point, as they still think about Roy Weatherby's slogan that his "bullets hits harder at all ranges".

Okay, I am probably showing my ignorance with this question but here goes. Since the 7 X 57 doesn't fit in the standard short action why wouldn't you just go straight to the 280?

Fair question, but I can't answer it.

Even though I perceive the .280 to be one of the most versitile cartridges EVER, I don't own one and probably never will, by choice. I do own 4, 7mm rifles and a 7x57 barrel looking for a home.

IMO The 7 mm Rem Mag is an extremely versatile
caliber . What Animal will it not bring down on any continent , other than the largest most dangerous of creatures ?.

A fully respectable caliber most times one shot drop .

100-180 grain Swift accurate proven for decades. Ammunition available most any where if one isn't a reloader it's not a problem .

I have owned, shot and hunted with a variety of 7mm's - up to the STW.

They will all do the job well, but my favorite all-around is a 7x57 Ruger No.1A topped with a Leupold 2x7 loaded to modern pressures with a 150 grain Partition.

If I simply had to live with a minimal rifle battery, this 7x57 paired with a .338 or 9.3 would keep me very happy.

Well I finally got a 7mm again actually two of them. I just picked up a 7mm-08 and a .280 GNR barrel for my Encore pistol. The 7mm-08 is in a 15" barrel and the .280 GNR is in a 17" with muzzle brake.

The .280 GNR is a improved .405 Win case necked down to .284. From what I'm told is that it can produce 2800 fps from that 17" barrel with 140 grain bullets. Looks like I got my .280 Rem back in a smaller package. Should make for quite the "hand cannon" for elk hunting.
