Not that the venerable .270 Win. ever needed help, but 80 years with only 2 .277 cal cartridges and 2 new ones in the last 2 years! We have a new .270 magnum in the .270 WSM and a new "mild" .270 in Remington's 6.8 SPC. What's next, a .270 RUM? What will the 7mm/30 cal boys have to say when the .270 bullet listing/variety starts being as long as theirs?

Being a die hard .270 fan, I'm not complaining. I always knew the .277 cal had what it takes to make it outside of the .270 Win velocity window. I guess time will tell. In a few years the "new" .270 rounds could be collecting dust, while the ol' .270 win keeps selling in the top 3. What do you think? Do the new .270 rounds have a chance to become popular and increase bullet weight choices & variety in .270 cal (not that it's not already large enough) or will things pretty much stay the same? I'm guessing we'll see a slew of 115 gr bullets popping up once the 6.8 SPC goes public, but not sure if there's enough interest on the magnum end for more bullet makers to start making 160 gr+ bullets.

Regards,

Lou

I never had much interest in the 270 in the past. I have always been a .284 fan. I recently bought a 270WSM barrel for my Blaser and plan to take it to South Africa in May.

Lou270... I am an absolute die-hard 270 fan, myself. What is amazing to me is the popularity and wide distribution around the world it has had, with only 2 cartridges. I will always be a die hard 270 fan, it represents to me, the smallest cartridge that holds many desirable qualities of getting the job done. My maturation process leading to the 270 was/is kinda interesting... I went from a 280, to a 7mag, to a 270 I saw absolutly no difference in the 3 in terms of penetration (yes with 175s also) and time taken for game to die. The next noticiable step to me is a 300.

The 270 has a few number of weights to choose from as the 7mm, but just about every kind of/make of bullet from every manufacture. Which suits me just fine, I shoot no more than 2 weights per caliber typicaly anyways.
