Well , after almost a full year, i have gone forward a little further on purchasing that dream moose gun, in .300 ultra mag. I have been doing my homework on this project for nearly a year. If you got the time to read this , bear with me. First i wanted a Savage 116 , good luck up here, no dealer in my surounding area carry them.(can order ya one)NO thank's, would like to see what i'm going to purchase first.Thought , well go for the Rem. 700 LSS. then i read on this site , about the safety's on the REM.'s. (no thank's)Than came a little deal, (all leagal)on a SAKO 75, synthetic, in .300 ultra, brand new in the box. For $1275.00 (dealer's up here are $1599.00) this is Can. dollar's, probably about $300.00 US. So my question is , good selection or not, or am i going to here something about Sako that will blow my mind, and end up , keep using my 99 savage in .308 with Federal HE, ammo.

Outstanding choice!! I LOVE my 300WM Model 75. Mine is SS with a walnut stock, and it looks SHARP! The trigger is damn near perfect for a hunting rifle, the action is smooth as silk. I would beg to differ on the Sako rings. My rifle came with a pair of them in medium height. MUCH TOO HIGH. I could have used a scope with a 56 mm objective with them. Also, they use hex head screws to keep the ring halves together. Leupold has shown beyond the shadow of any doubt that Torx screws are the way to go. Sako rings use four ring half screws, instead of the two used by Leupold, Burris, and others. Keeping the ring halves square to each other is twice as much of a pain in the ass with eight little screws, than what it is with four (two per ring). Sako low rings would have cost me nearly $100 for the pair, new. I fixed ALL my problems with a pair of Leupold ringmounts from Midway USA for $45.

quote:Being an engineer, I find Sako rings and mounts needlessly complicated and much too geared to typical European scope choices. The only good idea in them is the plastic ball insert. Even then, Burris makes rings with the same feature, only a much better design. Burris rings are lower, and their plastic insert in in two pieces, which makes it FAR easier to mount the scope vs. the Sako inserts that you have to pry open and drag over the scope until they snap in place. I don't know what your friend has against Leupold ringmounts for Sakos. I found them to be a superior design, and very well made, to boot. Regardless, if Sako rings work for you, that's the only thing that counts.

I have the Leupold rings on one of my Sakos. Have worked a charm for a very reasonable price. I could get them as low as I could use. - mike

The current crop of Sako rings are expensive, heavy, and very high above the bore. I've never understood the European preference for having to lift one's head off of the stock in order to acquire the sight picture. (On the other hand, the original Sako rings were pretty good, and I'm currently using a couple of them.) I have several sets of Leupold ringmounts on Sakos varying from .222 to .375 H & H. They are simple, lightweight, compact, and despite their fairly delicate appearance, seem to be plenty strong. The Millett Angle-Loc conversion for Sakos is often overlooked. These are working well for me on three Sakos. The low height will clear a 40mm objective in most applications.
