While I consider Elk a little tougher to lay down, I've taken Moose at over 400 with the .308.

Bartshe nailed it.

No problem. Stick to premium bullets 165gr and up and as always, watch your shot placement. Of course that holds for any caliber and any game. Wink

Here's one I shot 3 years ago with the 308 and 165 NAB at 301 yards (I kid you not):

Just fine, as long as you put the bullet where it's supposed to go.

If a 308 was what I had that's what I'd use. Elk at 300 yards with a 165 grain premium bullet should be no problem.

The wife and I have both killed a lot of game with the 308. She killed 2 kudu, wildebest, zebra, giraffe, and some smaller game, I killed heyena, and some smaller game with it in Zim.

We have killed several antelope, deer and wild pigs with the 308.

I would not hesitate to use it for elk with a good 165 or 180 grain bullet.

Its as good as a 30-06 for all practical purposes, especially with proper handloads. That is high praise IMO....
