As I write this my gunsmith is setting up my new light rifle for eastern whitetail. It's a Rem. 700 Titanium in 7mm 08 with a 22 inch barrel and one in 9 1/4" twist rate. It occurs to me that others on the forum may be experienced with with similar guns in 7mm 08 and able to recommend ammo for my purposes. Recommendations could save me some groping around on the range so close to the start of the season. I don't reload so I'll probably end up with one of the dozen or so factory loads available, but reloading may be in my future. My primary targets will be eastern whitetail deer which rarely exceed 200 lb.s or an unlucky black bear, 350 lb.s max. If I were primarily after a bear I'd use my 30'06. The prey will usually be inside 150 yrds. but occasionally out to 250. That's no stretch for a 7mm 08 energy-wise, so the lightest load that will shoot really well in the gun will be my choice in most cases. What's been your experience? Thanks! | ||

My load for the 708 is 39.5grs. of Varget under 150NBTs, and 39grs. of RE15 under 150MK, the BTs do a very good job on Whitetails here in Wis. Both are very accurate, shooting under 1/2" @100yds. for 5 shots, not letting the barrel get too warm though. 40grs. of RE15, or 41grs. of Varget with a 140gr slug should be very accurate, too.
