Congrats! Let us know how it shoot or if you change calibers.

While we are on the topic, does anybody know what the difference are between the model 50 and 51? My understanding is that they are both FN Mauser actions?

I've bought 4 of them, the last 2 with the intention of using the actions as a base for a custom rifle. But they always shoot so good that I can't see any reason to take them apart. My 270 is an honest to goodness 3/4" rifle with almost any ammo you put through it. The only ammo that it doesn't seem to like is Remington.

I also have one that is completely original. I don't think I'll ever do anything to it. Maybe find a Weaver 4x scope to put on it.

The original trigger is a 2 piece affair that should be replaced. If you get rid of the original safety, KurtC will want it.

Stopped by a gun shop on a whim today only to find an old JC Higgins model 50 30-06 on the rack. Stock was in good shape with only 1 real dig and the FN action was beautiful, never had a scope mounted. I pulled the bolt to find it shiny and oiled and looked down the barrel to find the same. I gave it a new home right away. Amazingly I've never owned an '06 before. I think I may take a deer with it as is, the open sights actually provide a nice picture, then we'll see if it becomes the 9.3x62 or 318 WR I've had on my mind for some time.

Never owned an 06?
Man its a great cartridge, I have 2 and although I must admit, I usualy chose another rifle when I go hunting,
I think I will turn my Interarms MK 10 into a lightweight, bob it to 22 inches recrown and put a cammo synthetic stock on it, it might get some serious use. the problem with the 06 is although it works for everything, there are better cartridges for most uses, I own 10 cartriges and when I deer hunt I usualy take my .270 .257r .280 7X57, and for Elk take my .338 STW or new 35 whelen...tj3006

Yes Kevin,

That is the one. Nice rifle. I like the three position flag for open sighted rifles and that safety for scoped rifles. Wanna trade?

How's she shoot?

If I get around to rebarreling it to 9.3 then I will go with a gentry 3 position and this safety will be for sale.

Those on Ebay are the crappy numrich parts. They come up often. They do not compare to the real FN. But thanks for looking out for me any way, I appreciate the heads up!

I just sold a new and unfired Model 51 in .30-06 which had been sitting in my vault for many years, to a young shooter for $300...and almost had to beg him to take it. I still think the only reason he did was because he couldn't find a beat-up Remington Model 700 locally for that price!

Anyway, I think they are great rifles, and am very pleased to see them held in high respect here at AR.

When my son-in-law took up deer hunting, he wanted my advice on a rifle. I convinced him to buy a used semi-custom 270 made on an FN Deluxe barreled action. He wasn't sure about it at first, wanted something new and shiney like his other friends (Rem 700), but as he has come to know guns better he is now very proud of that rifle.

I think there's an article on the Model 50 in one of the latest American Rifleman. The article tells the difference between 50, 51 and etc.

Just went and checked. It is the July issue of G&A page 54.

I paid 320 for it. I took it out of the stock tonight and that trigger is a bit funky. Looks like a couple of pins a little wood removal and a new trigger will fit right in. I am going to give it a go as an '06 for now, if it shoots well then maybe it will stay that way.

An old K-4 would look just right on it.
