Like several of you, I bought a few boxes of the Federal 270 Win 140 grain Trophy Bonded Ammo from Midway when they were selling it for $12/box a couple of weeks ago. I tried it at the range today in my M70 270 and the first round blew the primer. I just had to try one more shot and the second round leaked around the primer and the primer was seriously cratered. Even I decided to call it quits after that. Velocity over my Oehler was 3140 fps - about 200 fps over what is estimated on the box. I'll try the ammo in another rifle (my bolt action Dakota). It has a pretty loose chamber and maybe it can handle the ammo better. Just an FYI to others who may have purchased this ammo. ______________________________ "Truth is the daughter of time." I have always found Federal Premium ammo, regardless of caliber, to be very hot. This includes me and my brothers .243 Howa Varmint Supremes with 85 X bullets, my old 300wsm with 180gr something or others, and my brothers Howa 300 winnie with 180gr Accubonds. Every time, every rifle, the Fed stuff was pushing the pressure limits. We had to really pound the bolt open on the 300 win mag, and called it quites after 3 shots. Seems as though they should have been recalled instead of sold on clearance.....If they was mine, I'd pull the bullets and remove about three grains powder and reload them as it's a heck of a price.....I was slow on the trigger and didn't get any. I'll give you the purchase price if you'll ship them... /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." It would be interesting tearing into that ammo for a quick study. Are the case capacities smaller, or is it a decline in quality control?

I broke the bolt off of my Rem.700 in 300 wm. beating it open while shooting Federal Premium ammo. Doesn't say much for Remington or Federal. velocity is like a new car, always losing value. BC is like diamonds, holding value forever.

Correction, That should read : broke the bolt handle off. velocity is like a new car, always losing value. BC is like diamonds, holding value forever.

Interesting! In my M77MKII, the ammo is at the velocity listed on the box and, get this, is hands-down the most accurate load I've ever fired out of this rifle! Literally 1/2" 3-shot 100y groups. We were amazed when we tested it out last week. I never had even a hint of pressure with the ammunition. ForrestB, if you can't get it to shoot, I'll buy what you've got left! _____________________________________________________ No safe queens!

As Clayman states we found this to be very accurate ammunition in his 270 Ruger 77. He fired 3 shots over my Oehler and all three touched at 100 yards with an average velocity of 2820 fps, extreme spread of 17 fps and a standard deviation of 8 fps. I measured the case pressure ring and got an average maximum of 0.469466" which is under the accepted maximum of 0.470". In this rifle it is an excellent and cheap combination with a proven game bullet....but as we all know each rifle is unique...which of course is why we keep playinmg and experimenting! I had the same experience with my CZ model 3 in .300 wsm. I had to take the rifle in and have the chamber massaged a bit. Got tired of having to hammer on the bolt handle to extract a round. Mine did it with both the Fed premium and the fusion rounds. "I would rather have a German division in front of me than a French one behind me." -- General George S. Patton

I just sent three boxes of Federal 300WSM 180 grain Accubond ammo back to the factory. I could barely open the bolt. Same gun with Federal 180 TSX ammo worked like a charm. Federal is very anxious to get info about problem factory ammo. I would give them a call and you will get a call back from someone who knows what he is talking about. Have the lot number on hand when you call. It is printed inside one of the box flaps.

LJS - I want to say my 300wsm Fed ammo problems were also with Accubonds...but I can't be certain. I know me and my brother both tried the 180 accubonds when they were released, so that had to be...3-4 years ago? If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

Just heard back from Federal and all the ammo I returned was within their specs. There was an explanation that some bullets don't shoot well in some barrels. My problem was opening the bolt not accuracy so I guess I'm going to stick with the TSX loads. Federal is sending me replacemet ammo with the TSX bullets so I guess it all evens out.

just a wondering thought... with todays reliance on computer generated design and any industry's hurry to go from idea to the store shelf, i wonder if those loads were "computered", and not even really tested physicaly. there's so much information around about the powders, bullets, pressures, etc, to use for comparison, maybe half the stuff we buy is done that way.
