A question of bullet weights

I need some advice, particularly from Sako owners, but all please chime in.

I have a Sako 75 .300 Win Mag. It has a 24" barrel with a 1 in 11" right hand twist. What bullet weight would GENERALLY be most accurate in a barrel with that length and twist? I would not try to shoot much past 350 yards or so with this rifle.

Most of my experience is with the .30-06. My Howa (22" 1 in 10" barrel) really likes 150 grain bullets, particularly the Remington Core Lokt pointed soft point.

You didn't say if you were looking for a target bullet or hunting,I would give any of the various 180gr bullets a try. Your twist is right in the middle & so is the 180gr weight. Good luck!

Thanks Fred. I need a hunting bullet. I picked up a box of 150 grain Remington Core Lokts, to try along with the 180 grain Federal stuff I have. I'll see how it goes.....

The .300 rifles were originaly intended to shoot larger .30 cal bullets faster. When they came along the 30-06 and .308 could shoot 150 gr and 165 gr bullets fast, then with bullets heavier than that the slower speeds resulted. With the 180 gr bullets and up the .300's really shine on the game animals of North America and elsewere. Your barrel will tell you what it likes, if you shoot it enough. Don't make the mistake of picking only one bullet weight and when your rifle does not shoot it well, discount the rifle. Try all weights, it will probably like at least one weight or make of bullet. [Wink] Good shooting.

So far the 180 grain bullets are ahead. I'm getting much better groups than with the 150 gr. kind. Barrel still needs more break in, because groups are still 1.25 to 1.5 MOA.
