I'd nix the Swede idea and then lend thought towards a 6.5-284...............

I'm thinking of a 6.5x284 Big Stick, in your opinion/experience, why it over the .260 Rem or 6.5x55? Thanks for your anticipated response.

I think it is of enough capacity to do good things, without going crazy and chasing rainbows. No flies on the 260,though the Swede never personally excited me. An arguement could be made for the merits of the 260AI as well, especially as a short action repeater based upon a Rem 700...........

Just do a search for 1000 yd clubs and matches....see what the "experts" are shooting. I'll bet the lion's share of top 20 finishers goes to the 6.5-284.

A 6.5 STW loaded with 155grn Sierra Matchkings would be intresting. For biggest bang for your buck you can't beat Lazzeroni's 6.71 Blackbird.

Rod, What is best depends on what you intend to use it for. I built a 6.5-'06 years ago on a Remington M700 (Shilen barrel) for a Western US deer rifle. It has a 9" twist barrel and shoots all bullets up to 140 grains well. It will shoot 160 grain round nose bullets, but not semi-sptizers or spitzers (they are too long to stabilize). I bought a supply of 120 grain Swift A-Frame bullets for future deer hunts. If you want to shoot long bullets you will need to go with a fast twist like the European 6.5X55 standard of 7.87" (200 mm). I make brass by necking up Winchester .25-'06 brass, which seems to be uniform stuff. When I laid in my stock about 1990, it was easy to come by and relatively cheap. So if those factors matter, then the 6.5-'06 is "best". jim dodd

small capacity =6.5 TKS ( that a 6.5 BR Improved ) medium capacity 6.5x55 improved 6.5/284 and 6.5/06 can produce hight velocity and great accuracy. 155 Sierra MK have a old design an low BC better to use 142 SMK or 139 Lapua BC is near to 0.6 on big case capacity 6.5/300 WEA is interesting and is the maw powder volume you can use in 6.5 to launch bullet very fast over 6.5/300 WEA you burn barrel faster but doesn t improved your velocity good shooting DAN TEC

6.5-06 Ackley Improved....just do some website surfing and you'll see what it will do. I am a week away from sending out my 30-06 to get rebuilt into one. My gunsmith just built one for another guy, and he says that it is absolutely deadly accurate and flat shooting. And 140 grain 6.5 bullets have BIG cross-sectional density numbers, so as they say, it kills bigger than it ought to....

HEY' I did the 6.5-06 AI.Very happy with the results.I don't shoot bullets,heavier than th 129Horn SST,because I specified,the bullets I would use.I cannot seat those long bullets,in my rifle.The 120 ballistic,gives me,just under 3400 fps,and a group under.2. 1geejay www.shooting-hunting.com
