I have a former 300WSM SAVAGE action that needs a new barrel. I already have a 300WSM tactical and a 270WSM lightweight mountain gun.

325WSM is the obvious one that comes to mind. What else can I do???????????????????????? fishing

Would like something out of the ordinary or kinda outa the norm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would love a 35Wheelen or 338-06AI but I dont think this one will cut the mustard.

Please elaborate snowman.

I am pondering 338WSM. That shouldn't be to bad to do but not sure of ballistics. Assuming between 338-06 and 338WinMag.

Could I turn this to 375 Ruger??? Not familiar w. that one.

The 6.5 WSM and the 338 WSM sound like a great pair to me.

The 35 WSM has already been done - 35 Sambar. Would make a terrific thumper on the WSM sized action.

If a .338 interests you, look at the new 338 RCM. I think this is very similar to a 338 WSM.

For those in the know, is there a 9.3 WSM?

I have the reamer and gages to turn your Savage into a .416 WSM. I just finished one for a friend and it shoots MOA. Last Thursday we were at the range and I was shooting my .416 Taylor and he was shooting the .416 WSM. The WSM had noticeably less recoil with almost the same ballistics. It would make a great DGR and plains game gun as well. With 400 gr. bullets we were getting 2300 fps. The 300 gr. are up a little over 2500fps. No pressure signs so I thinnk the 300's could go a little faster. I would be happy to make a barrel for you.....Tom

I'm interested in a Stainless 416-300 WSM barrel for a Savage 116. I will be in your neck of the woods next summer. Maybe we could work something out and pick it up then? e-mail me if you are interested.

Biscut If you have a 270 and a 300 WSM you have 2 flat shooting numbers. You really don't need more of the same. Yes there is the 325 WSM which is an 8mm so it will handle slightly heavier bullets. The 338 WSM seems to be popular with some. There are certainly lots of 338 cal bullets out there designed for the various 338 mags. The reason I sugested the 35 which could be called the 35WSM and it is also called the 35 Sambar or the 375 version is many of the 35 and 375 cal bullets have a shorter ogive. The long ogive on many 338 bullets must be seated quite deep in the WSM case and that compromises case capacity. For example take a look at the short ogive on the 260 gr Nosler or the 270 grain Hornady bullets. In either the 35 or 375 cal you can have a powerful caliber that would handle anything in north America including big bears yet still have a trajectory that makes hitting a target out to 300 yds very possible. A 35 or 375 WSM would give up very little to the 358 Norma or the 375 H&H. That would make it a very desireable elk, moose and bear rifle. If you go to larger calibres such as 416 or 458 they are short range powerhouses but your effective range is shortened up. Not all will agree with my line of thinking and thats OK. It is merely a suggestion for something a little different. Ihope it helps you with a decision.

While the 416 intrigues me I really am leaning toward the 338 and the 35.

Am I correct to think I can get a necking up die from Redding and simply move up to 35 from 30 cal in one step using 300WSM brass??

35 WSM should be great, I've seen the 416 versions and they function great.
The 338 would also be interesting to me, I think that sould be a nice power/speed blend with some pretty potent bullets. I'd check with Redding on necking up all the way to 35 in one step, they shold be agood source of that intel.

Good luck whichever way you go.

Rolltop,
My hunting partner and I have your pair, 6.5 and .338 WSMs, built before the .325 WSM was ever heard from. We have switch barrel rifles so there isn't a problem with two guns. Both his and my rifles are fantastic. We took the .338 WSMs to Namibia in June. Used Nosler 210gr partitions which worked great. I think I might prefer 225s next time, but that's just me. Both are easy to load for (6.5s made from .270 WSM brass and .338s made from both .300 and .325 WSM brass).

I like the idea of the 325 WSM.

Also see where Grafs has Redding dies in stock for the 338/300 WSM and the 35/300 WSM!

I checked with Phil from Sinclair (I trust him) and Redding makes dies for all of the cals mentioned.

I'm still looking 338 or 35. Only issue raised is COL vs. magazine lenght. Any trouble seating boolits with max loads and stil being able to make magazine length?

I understand some of this will be depend upon the magazine and distance to lands of the rifle itself, but generally some combos just dont really work well.
