Go with the 6.8 SPC. Barnes is turning out some really good bullets for the 6.8

For the close range work and possible large animals, I voted "other" and suggest one of the big bore AR uppers. 450 Bushmaster, 458 SOCOM, 50 BEOWULF perhaps? I do believe all of those work off of the .223 case head dia, correct me if I'm wrong

i voted for the "other"... i got a nice RRA in .458 socom, delivered to my FFL, for less than $1100 a couple months ago... load it down with pistol bullets and plink away, or load it up with 600 grains and go after something big....as soon as i can find 1, i'll have an armalite m15 in 7.62x39..... i've gots lots of that ammo, and its fun to shoot it...

go big or go home ........

I think you can get an upper in .243 and .25 WSSM. That would be my choice for a "Hunting AR".

None of the above

Spikes Tactical .22LR upper

It is too much fun!!!! And cheap to shoot!

And IME, targets of opportunity are more like a grouse or big ol squirrel!

You can get the 223, 243, 25, 30 and 35 wssm's from a guy in Indiana, but I believe the uppers are for AR10's IIRC

Before ruling out the WSSM's check out Dtech.

Dtech AR's
Mike builds all the standard WSSM's + 7mm, .300 WSSM, .338 WSSM & 358 WSSM.

I have one of his 243 WSSM's and hunt an arid area w/lots of limestone dust. Haven't had any problems w/rifle in spite of no dust cover.

MileHigh, if you haven't been down to COS and checked out Specialty Sports, you need to since you like Black Rifles

But for the elk I'd pick the Grendel, but since elk are a target of opportunity in your neck of the woods I voted with those who chose "other" in the form of a 450 Bushmaster, 458 SOCOM, or 50 Beowulf.

A mate of mine dropped a 400lb plus cow elk with his 6.8spc chambered LWRC AR15 in 2007. Bullet was the Barnes TSX.
40yd shot & the elk fell where it stood.

Well I did a complete 180 and purchased a 450 Bushmaster upper. I had never heard of it until MileHighShooter mentioned it in his post. Factory ammo is available and I found out that I can use my M16 magazines if I just change the follower. That's good for me because I have a rucksack full of magazines.

Now you have really got my interest on a related question....if you can use the .450 in the Bushmaster mags just by cvhanging the followers, can you do the same thing with the 7.62x39?

Just before you posted I went through the same mental hassle, and elected to get a complete DPMS upper with carry handle, bolt assembly, metallic sights, and 16" barrel in 7.62x39.

One reason I did that is I have plenty of AA1680 to feed it, a lifetime supply of primers, and was able to get unfired boxer primed IMI cases for 16 cents each. Also found Hornady 125 gr. SP .310 bullets for $79 per thousand.

It would really be nice if I could just switch out followers on my spare bagful of mags and have them work properly in the 7.62 x 39 m/m.

TIA for any info, positive or negative, about the potential of that idea.

No doubt the smaller rounds can kill game. Can you tell us more about the shot, wound path, penetration, etc? Was your mate elk hunting on purpose or was he living the "surprised elk in my face" scenario? Thanks.

Let me check here to make sure you understand my question and that I understand your answer.....

I am not asking if you can push/lift the 7.62x39 rounds with the .450 follower. I am asking if a person could use another, different, special follower to just as simply convert .223 mags to 7x39 mags?

Thanks, Grenadier -

Well, I guess the answer is that I'll have to provide my own mags. I'm absolutely certain mags can be made which will work, but I am not yet sure exactly how I will want to go about it.

I have a 20-round one now which works fine. I don't even recall where I got it, let alone who made it or out of what. It appears to be a 5-round AR mag, joined to the top of an AKS mag, and definitely is not straight except for the 5-round part that enters the lower receiver.

I am trying to recover from a long battle (still ongoing) with a very painful & dangerous medical condition, so it will be a while before my shop and I are back in operation, but then I'll see what I can Rube Goldberg engineer. In the meantime I have a couple of 10-rounders and a 5-rounder which will keep me happy for a little while.

Thanks again,

AC
