Just got a german wea. 340. I don't have any idea why except its got a gorgeous custom maple stock.
Is this a good round for elk size game?
Does it have good trajectory?
What bullet weights would be good say for sheep, or
long range ?

The 340 is awesome. It's range and flightpath can be pretty much compared to a 7mm mag. If you look at a 7mm with a 175 sierra bt and a 340 with a 250 si bt you'll find the speed and the ballistic coefficients are a pretty close to a match. Probably a perfect zero for both would be 250 yds. Both would get about 3.5" high on the way to 250 and would be about 4" low at 300.
EXCEPT the 340 is gonna carry about 50% more energy accross those distances.
The tradeoff is recoil of course. I have a 340 and had a gunsmith put on a muzzle break with small ports that go straight out the side. In the field it doesn't seem louder than any other non muzzle break rifle and it kicks about like a light wt 30-06.

Big Don:

The 340 Weatherby is one fine caliber. It will drop ANYTHING you want to shoot in North America. Chevy, Dodge, Ford, just kidding. I've been loading for the big 338's and the only hunting bullet that I would recomend is the Barnes TSX "Tripple Shock X" bullet. It stays together at the higher velocities of the Weatherby's. This bullet out of a 338/378 Weatherby shot a 3.75" five shot group at 500 meters. Not bad for a hunting bullet. These bullets have performed great in everything we have loaded them in from a 243 Win to the 338/378 Weatherby. The bullets are a little pricey but what is the cost of a hunting trip. And besides, how mant shots do you shoot at game? With a muzzle brake on your Weatherby, It might become one of your favorite rifles. The recoil on Jesse's 338/378 is so light, It's hard to get him to stop shooting his cannon.

Catch you later, I think you'll be very happy with your Weatherby.

Big Don ----- Welcome to AR. The .340 Wby is an awesome round. My flat shooting load is a 225 North Fork bullet at 3150 fps, my heavier load is with a 240 grain North Fork. I use Rl-22, RL-19 powder and Fed 215M primers. I have taken several Bull Elk and only one took more than one step and he went 50 feet. wave thumb Good luck and good shooting.

For a light bullet load try the 210 TSX. Used it in my 338/378 this year, very accurate and deadly.

The 340 is a bit much for most big game......but it's a very fine round for those that can shoot it.

If it was mine, I'd load it back a bit more like a 338-06 and use it at lots lower pressure.

Again.....fully adequate for anything that walks given the right bullet........howevr, it's not always legal for DG

Vapo--it's only not legal due to it's diameter, not to all it's other excellent qualities. It is without a doubt a leader in the 338 category, and has very-very few equals. The 340 can talk the talk and walk the walk. It's ability to reach out and render your target a disaster, in accordance with your abilities, is the sign of a superior product.

The 340 is simply a superb cartridge... I was looking for one and just couldn't find one I liked but I did find a 338-378...

Some call it a bit much for elk but it will get the job done... Being overgunned won't hurt a thing in this case...

Have to agree on the Barnes TSX bullets... Mine shoots at to slightly under 1 MOA out of the box with factory Weatherby ammo... I'm certainly not going to complain about that...

Ken....

My old elk load is 87.5 Gr of RE 22 powder, Federal 215 primers,Hornady 225 SP bullet. OAL 3.685 inches. Five shot 100 Yd groups size are between one to 1 1/2 inches If I were to use it for smaler game I would try a Nosler 210 Gr bullet. The 340 is one fine elk round.

I had a custom 340 barrel 1:10 twist on a M700. It used to shoot .6 all day with the old 210XBT and RE 22.

I'd try the North Fork 240 in that rifle of yours and relax......................it will do it all.

The 340wby is a great elk round. Even for deer size game out farther. You can drive the 210grNP or 200grNAB or 185gr TSX to some impressive vel. All bullet wts. from 185-275gr hit game very, very hard. If you can handle the recoil, load her up & go hunting. thumb
