Today at the shoot range, my nephew ran a Federal Premium Barnes TSX 7mm-08 round through my brother-in-law's Sako 300 Win Mag. Would this damage the barrel or chamber?

Old friend of mine fired 3 or 4 25-06 rounds thru my 30-06 - no damage done. Hope you can say the same.

I don't see how you would get it to fire. The 7mm-08 would just rattle around the chamber. How would the firing pin hit the primer?

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

It is conceivable that if the extractor caught the rim of the case it could hold it long enough to fire.....Likely?.....maybe not but possible.

What did the brass look like afterwards? Did it cause split neck or damaged web? By the way, it's okay to admit it was you and not your nephew that made the mistake. Smiler

Talk about the concept of excessive head space!

I've seen 300 Win Mag fired in a 300 Wby chamber and 243 Winchester fired in a 25'06 but both of those miscombinations had the same head diameter. They was no case rupture or gas leakage in either situation, but as you can imagine the 24 caliber bullet didn't hit the paper at 25 yards after rattling down a 25 caliber bore. It's a little difficult to imagine the 7mm08 getting an effective primer strike in the magnum chamber. If it did ignite then I'd wonder why the case didn't split and ruin the stock or blow out the magazine or floorplate. Is there anything else you can tell us about the incident?

Slight side-track to the thread, every one knows that shooting the wrong shell or bullet is a huge no-no!

Here is a 'WHAT NOT TO DO' with surprising result! (20 gauge jammed in front of a 12 gauge and fired)

Since the 300s both headspace on the rim no big deal. Take some serious force or real bad chamberfor a 243 to be chambered in a 25-06 a 243 case is .008" larger in dia at the shoulder than the chamber of a 25-06.

With a CRF the extractor will normally hold a case of the same dia and allow it to fire.

Winchester did this exact demonstration, with their Model 59 shotgun, with the "Winlite" fiberglass shrouded barrel, back in the late '50's. The autoloader was still a huge failure for them, even though it was a fine shotgun.

Saw the remains of a Remington 7mm that fired a factory .270 Winchester---
Mag well blown out, Wood stock splintered , bolt stuck.
The gas released into the mag well/action area was devastating.
According to Remington to paraphrase "the action did its job". (BTW, they replaced the rifle, seems the factory box of Remington 7mm Mag contained .270 Win (by Remington) First shell fired in a new gun.

The gun and shells were bought at the same time brand new.

Have also see a .308 Win fired in an UltraLite Weatherby Mark V .270Win.
Watched the guy fire it and say"That kicked harder than usual".
Spotting scope showed a 10 ring hit.
Bolt opened and removed a straight wall .308.
Gun checked out fine, headspace etc.

He simply grabbed the wrong round lying on the bench by him.

Similar errors , differing results--so I no longer predict what mistaken combos will do.

Never thought a Rem 700 would com apart the way that one did.
