Which cartridge to use for elk?
Thanks for all the replies, I had planned on using the 338-06, but I may grab whichever rifle tickles my fancy for the day. I have not shot an elk with my 270 for quite a few years, the Brenneke is just itching to go hunting. So many rifles, so little time. The 22-250 is illegal in SD. But I thought I might get a rise out of HC.

Really looking forward to the season. A very good friend drew an archery tag, and his daughter drew a cow tag also. It shall be a season of elk hunting for sure and I can't wait. The daughter will be using a 7mm-08 with premium 140gr bullets.

SDHUNTER: Everyone know's, the 22-250 is a better big game cartridge, than say oh hell, the 270 Winchester, LOL!

I voted for the 210TSX with the 338-06 as I have a 338-06AI with 225gr reloads of Accubonds and TTSX's.

I have taken a few cow elk with my 270WSM and 140gr Accubonds. My wife, father in law and bro-in-law have done the same as I have two 270WSM's.

The last cow elk (large sized) for me was in 2008, 200m shot-doublelung pass thru and she flipped over backwards from the shot and dropped. BTW it was -33 degrees C.

-33 degrees C, that's harsh. I have known to hunt in those kind of conditions.

Yeah, the 270 is nothing but a pea shooter. lol

I should have stipulated that this .270 needs to be in the form of a Pre-64 Model 70 wood stocked loaded with Blue Dot loads of those Berger Bullets to promote "innerd shifting" and to minimize ricochets.. This was the time period of craftsmanship in America and supersedes any of the plastic toys produced by want ta bees.
