Always knew she was a good round! ====================================== Hunter bags three deer with one shot By Sam Cook Duluth News Tribune (MCT) DULUTH, Minn. - Minnesota's firearms deer season was almost over, and Chris Olsen of Two Harbors needed to get his venison. One shot changed his season in a big way. Olsen killed three deer with the same bullet from his 8-millimeter Mauser. Olsen, 50, was hunting on his property about 15 miles north of Two Harbors late in the afternoon Nov. 17. Two deer that Olsen described as yearlings (1 1/2-year-olds) walked in to check out a scent cloth he had put out. He was going to shoot one of the yearlings, when a doe appeared. It approached the yearlings at the scent cloth, which was about 60 yards from Olsen's stand. "I thought, `I'm going to have to shoot her. It's desperate times,' " Olsen said. He was shooting the 8-millimeter Mauser he had bought from a friend about a year ago, he said. It's a German military rifle, he said. Olsen shot the doe with a single shot, and all three deer bounded away. Olsen thought he might have missed. Later, his brother Lee Olsen of Two Harbors joined him. They found the doe a short distance away and field-dressed her. "By George, we got done with her, and there was another one," Olsen said. "I thought, `Wow, two deer with one shot.' " The two men field-dressed the yearling and retired to their deer shack for the night. The next morning, Chris Olsen got to thinking, and he went back to where he had found the doe and the yearling. "We retraced our steps, and my gosh, there's a drop of blood," he said. Olsen found the third deer - the second yearling - not far away. All three deer had fallen within 50 yards of each other, Olsen said. The bullet had passed completely through the first two deer and a piece of it had lodged in the third deer. "I couldn't believe it. It's absolutely unbelievable," Olsen said. Olsen had tags to legally take all three deer. He was checked later in the hunt by Department of Natural Resources conservation officer Kipp Duncan of Two Harbors. Duncan wasn't surprised when Olsen told him he had taken three deer. But he was surprised when Olsen told him he had taken all three with a single shot. Olsen is happy. "We got venison," he said. © 2006, Duluth News Tribune (Duluth, Minn.). Roger....this guy hunts with a milsurp mauser and lives just north of Duluth.....therefore his real name is Ole or Sven or something like that and he always says "ya shore, ya betchya"! I you asked what bullet he used he'd say "ya shore, ya betchya" If you asked what brand it was he'd say "ya shore, ya betchya" He's never been in a parade ..."ya shore, ya betchya" and don't know enough to come in out of the rain....."ya shore, ya betchya" There's no way therefore I can rain on his parade!!!!!"ya shore, ya betchya" If, in fact it was Ole...then one of the deer was named sven and the other was Toivo.....and one was Lena.....Things get tough up there in the north country sometimes! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I gotta admit, I sure miss the folks in northern Minnesota and hunting up there... some of these old guys, although this guy is my age!!!... sure get some unbelievable luck... one year, north of Hibbing, I was watching a logged out field, with a big pine grove in the middle that was left after they logged the area out.... off to its right was a river by about 200 yds or so... Well from about 400 yds or more, I watched this big buck come running from the river, and headed straight into, what I called the pine island... I watched for a while to see if there was any movement, and seeing none, I finally went down to meander thru that large grove and see if I kicked up anything... several people from our party were in stands on the far side of that logged area, so If I kicked anything out the backside, it would head towards them.... This is about 10am.. so I wandered into the pine grove, and sure enough I kicked up several deer, but couldn't get a good enough look to see if they were bucks or does... Well I followed their direction, until all of a sudden a shot rang out, a quick pause, another shot, pause, another shot, pause another shot, until 6 shots had rang out.... After the second one, I had dropped to my knees to lower my profile from potential flying lead... Then I hear this unfamilar voice yelling and screaming... so I come up toward the voice, and here is this old Minnesota farmer with a 30/30 in his hands... laying on the ground are 6 big bucks! Well what happened, is this old guy was out at the bar until 2 or 3 am in Chisholm and was three sheets to the wind.. so instead of going home he drove out to where he was to be deer hunting and meeting his party at.. and just slept in the front seat of his truck... so he wakes up at about 9 am and then sets out on foot to find the people in his party...with a hangover going on.. so he comes walking into this pine grove on the other side, and he said all of a sudden this doe come whizzing by him... and then another.... then comes this big buck, running at him so he shoots him with the 30/30... well right behind him is another.. then another, and so on... so he shot 6 until he ran out of ammo.. and he said several more ran right past him! I am thinking, of all the bullshit luck and injustice in life... then he realizes that he has 6 dead deer and ONE tag.... oh shit, he says, I sure hope you aren't with the DNR! I tell him no I wasn't..... so I walked off shaking my head, back to my vehicle... and he takes off trying to find all the people in his party, to tag all the bucks he just shot.. at about 25 yds!!!! there were enough people in his party to tag them all! Sven, Ole, Lena, Toivo and Uno up there seem to have all the luck... LOL...

Seafire I believe your story, but it amazes me becasue back in the time you are talking about Minnesota didn't have near the deer that Minnesota has today, and especially up in the Northern part of the State near Hibbing. As for the guy with the 8mm Mauser, I am with Vapdog. I can't hardly believe it. I am betting the guy was using store bought Remington 8mm Mauser loads, which no way would they go through three deer at 50 yards.

Don't kid yourself. There are a lot of folks that do talk that way in Northern Minnesota, and even in Southern Minnesota. Another favorite up there is "you got dat right" and "yah right" and "wacha doon" As for being a tough place to live, there is a Christmas song that give you the flavor of the place by indicating that the folks buy their Christmas presents by 'layaway at Shopko" and if you don't know what a Shopko is, its about 5 steps below a K-Mart.

[QUOTE]Originally posted by 22WRF: Seafire 'I believe your story, but it amazes me becasue back in the time you are talking about Minnesota didn't have near the deer that Minnesota has today, and especially up in the Northern part of the State near Hibbing.' 22WRF; I don't remember any real shortages up north out of Chisholm... we hunted about 20 miles north of Chisholm off of Rt 73 there... there was always plenty enough deer in that area! our worst year out of a party of 8 was 5 deer one year... often we all would fill our tag... the biggest deer I have ever taken was up there, which was a 10 point that field cleaned at 265 lbs...which was about 1984 or 85.... my father in law, whom was a state trooper at the time, shot 2 bucks and a doe at a distance of about 15 to 20 yds....we had driven down into a swamp.. and were pushing them out where he was stationed at the top of a trail that came out of there.... he had about 8 or so run right by him.. he shot two bucks and then the one doe, as we only had one doe tag in the party... all three were shot quickly.. he was toting an old 351 Winchester SL.. that had belonged to his dad, whom had been a prison guard at either Stillwater or Sandstone way back when... I know now it is a lot more plentiful now.. but there was not an real low numbers where we hunted.. MN DNR reported good numbers every year.. in fact they were more plentiful than where I hunted over by Tomahawk Wisconsin after the MN season was over... compared to the few deer around here now.. I dream of those day nowadays...OFTEN!

yeah from my experiences, Vapo has the speech patterns pretty darn down pat! my favorite joke about back there.. " Oly und Lena, dey live on da border a Norda'koda und Souda'koda...deir farm sits right on da state line... wid da outhouse in Souda'koda, da barn in Norda'koda, und da state line run right threwda livin' room... and don't forget the Minnesota classic, with women... oh isssshhhh!! my ex wife's home town was Chisholm... mainstreet was like 4 blocks and there were 13 bars in that 4 blocks...and draft beer was so cheap, you could leave home with $4.00 in your wallet, and crawl home with change left over... 12 ounce drafts were like 35 cents, and about every 4th or 5th one, they didn't even charge you for it!
