I have a Model 70 Winchester in 300 Rem Ultra Mag,
"CLSC" as it is designated, which is still brand new in the box. It sports a synthetic stock and 26" barrel. I bought it a couple of years ago when I "just HAD to have an Ultra Mag". It came from Davidson's whose flyer described it as a "limited run" item. I would like to use its action to build either a 8x68S or 9.3x64 Brenneke. Now to the question:
Will either conversion work in that particular Model 70 action?
I realize that the main issues here are the bolt face diameter and potential feeding problems.
I've even contemplated just selling it outright due to the fact that it is, after all, a brand new limited run Model 70 which someone could enjoy as is. If I went that route it would mean purchasing an action separately and having it mated to a barrel. Any suggestions or advice? Thanks.

Those calibers belong on a Mauser action. If it were me, I would dump the Winchester in a heartbeat and build a custom Mauser (with a walnut stock, please) from the action up.

You should probably check with Jeff but I think you will have an issue with the size of the bolt face on your rifle with your desired cartridge.

You can do either cartridge on a Winchester. And it will probably be easier than doing in on a Mauser. The probelm you face that is your action is set up for a cartridge that is wider and has a larger bolt face than is required for either cartridge you're asking about.

If you could swap this rifle for a new Winchester 30-06 or 300 Winnie (and then replace the magnum faced bolt with a standard faced bolt), you'd be set. You would still need the new barrel, the bolt face opened slightly, and perhaps some feeding work.

Thanks for your responses. Yes, it will definitely be a walnut stock! I'm not a plastic/sythetic/whatever guy either. Who is Jeff that you mention? And by the way, do you guys know if it is permitted to offer a rifle for sale on this website? Thanks again.

Jeffe is moderator on the Gunsmithing board. You can offer a rifle for sale on the Classified board. And you can make a .404 Jeffery on a RUM!
