What are all of you mule deer hunters going to use (rife/caliber) this season? I have decided to pack both my Steyr Mannlicher 6.5x55 (140 grain Partition) and my Ruger M77 International in .250 Savage (100 grain Hornady). I am also bringing a small, lightweight .410 shotgun for grouse in the timber in case I fill my tag early.

I'm a -06 fan, but I've been known to use the splendid old Roberts from time to time. A few years back my buddy and I planned a military rifle only hunt with original 03 Springfields. I also have the greatest respect for old mausers in 6.5X55, and 8X57. This year I will try to fill my "B" tag with a Colt 45 carbine, or 7X57 Remington rolling block.

Son, grandsons, best friend, and I are all after mule deer this fall. Guns will be: a Ruger .45 Colt revolver (mine), 7x30 Waters, .30-30 (both of last two in T/C Contender carbines), .308win, and spares of .25-06, .338-06, 7mmRem Mag, and a .300 Rem Ultra Mag. Elk are also on the menu, thus the .338 and magnums.

While I believe the 6.5-06 is the ideal mulie rifle, the .270 is darn near the equal.

Damn hard to beat them.

I like a .257 Weatherby, but any .270, .280, 7Mag, 7x57 etc. are all just as good.

Well I'm real tempted to use my "cheap 96 Mauser sporter project" in 6.5x55 shooting 140 gr Rem cor lokts. But I will probably use my tried and true 30/06 cuz I just can't seem to leave it when I go to hunt anything. My trusty '06 is a Win M70 Lightweight with a laminated stock and since 1986 I've taken many Deer and Elk as well as Bighorn Sheep, Mountain Goat, Antelope Coyotes and the like with it and it just seems to work pretty damn well for everything. The Mauser is shooting tiny little groups even better than my '06 but it may end up going as the back up rifle.

Were I hunting muleys during rifle season this year it would be 7x57 using 175 grain Hornady RN bullets at 2400 fps....BUT this year I'll be using a 50# Martin recurve and a cedar arrow with a 125 grain Magnus broadhead....playing cat-and-mouse in the SE NM sand dunes during the rut (Jan 1-15) is quite challenging and fun.

Good hunting,

Andy

7mm Ultra Mag with 160 grain Nosler Accubonds.
Will shoot 1/2" groups at 200 yards when I do my part. I like the 280 Ackley with 140 grain accubonds. Both are remington 700's. Great luck to everyone this year.

When I was growing up it was my uncle who infected me with all this gun & handloading business. He passed away awhile back and I came into his 1954 M70 300 H&H. I'am going to shoot a deer this fall with it for old time sake. I'll use a 150gr. Partition Gold at just over 3200fps. Pete

7mmRemMag with 160gr Accubonds for mulies and elk infront of Ramshot BigGame (load not yet determined) with a 4.5x14 Fullfield II.

I usually prefer 139gr Interlocks, but my deer hunt could end up being an elk hunt.

This is my first year hunting with a rifle in the last 6 for mule deer. I'll probably use my tried and true .270 although I have a 8mm-06 project that is ready to bloodied and it shoots 175 grain bullets pretty well. I've been hunting the open plains with a .50 cal Hawken rifle the last few years

I have drawn a pair of muzzleloader tags, so my Ultra Light Arms M90 .50 is going hunting for at least the first season. Maybe the .50 Savage ML10 II for the second.

I usually take my 6.5-'06 in centerfire seasons.

The first & only mule deer I ever took was with my .340 wea. and it worked like a charm. In fact that was the first animal I aimed at with it. If all goes as planed I'll use it this year.

Sako m75 300WM with 180gr Accubonds is what is use for all my big game hunting. My wife packs her Tikka T3 LS 270WSM with 140gr Accubonds with great results. Sweet liitle caliber this one is.

I may have to try my 270WSM T3 LS with 140gr reloads of Accubonds, and use it for this season of hunting for all my big game.

Pre-64 M-70 375 H&H, 300 gr. A bit of overkill I know, but actually destroys less meat than my 280 Rremington used to. By the way, works great on prarie dogs also, great practice!

I was drawn for a real good area up here in Alberta this year (185-210 Typical, possibility) I will be using my "Customized" Rem. CDL in 7mmSTW, I have some 140 TSX loaded up, and cant wait to give them a go.
Had I not sold my Bansner .280 Rem., then that would likely be what I were to use.

Not mule deer but Blacktails, would take the same for mule deer. New model 70 featherweight in 6.5x55 with 140gr Hornadys and a 1-4x Redfield, old scope. As a backup, I'm taking a 700 BDL in 6.5-06 (Shilen barrel) using 129 gr Hornady spire points with a 3x9 Tasco World Class scope (older one). My son will be using my old Rem 660 in 308 with 180gr Hornady spire points and a 2-7x Tasco World Class.
