Trying to work up some loads using RL22 and 160/175 gr bullets. Should I stick with magnum primers, or use std large rifle primers as a few have suggested for better accuracy? What is the performance drop off in cold weather with non-magnum primers and slow powders? Appreciate the feedback.

I've always used Fed GM215M primers in my 7mm RM.

I have just worked up a load for my 7 mag but was pondering the exact same question.

Fortunately the fed mag match primers are working fine but was wondering what potentially improved results I may achieve with using non mag primers. I too would be very interested to hear from anyone who has experimented.

My friend and I experimented the effects of different primers. Our conclusion was that magnum primers did not neccessarily produce higher or lower velocities nor tighten or expand group size. My wildcat .260 load shoots under 1/2 with FEd.215 and my 7 RM load shot under 1/2" with WLRM. Hope this sheds some light.

I would try both. I have found no problems using std or match primers in 7remmag loads using rl22 OR imr7828. Your accuracy may vary, it does in some carts. for me.

I've always used Mag primers with any belted case. I mean, what're you gonna hurt?

Depends. If you are using WLR then they are fine & that is what I use in my 7mm Rem with no problems at all. If you are using CCI then I might go with the Mag.

I have not had any issues with using WLR's in cases up to 375 H&H & using Ball powders (W760).

You should definately be using magnum primers.

Reloader 22 is a double based slow powder that may be hard to ignite. In any case a magnum primer should be used with charges of 60 grains or more of slow burning powder.

I had the same question called Alliant & was told to use magnum primers with RL 22 & 25.

In my STW,
I get 75 FPS more speed with a fed 215M than with CCI magnum primers, Using RL-25.
Even in the smaller 7 mag thats a lot of slow powder. I, bet the mag primers will burnfaster and cleaner. And more consistantly.

Lower SD, slightly better MV average, and tighter groups from my 7RMs with Fed 215GMMs.

No controversy ; I just wanted to clear up a point . In many cases a STD. or Mag primer may be interchanged in a particular load , with no diverse consequences . Having said this let me clarify a real important point . Some times NOT ALWAYS !.

Magnum primers were primary designed for Large capacity cases cold weather ignition slow burning powders , all of this to insure as complete a powder burn as possible .

For the combination you suggest, stick with magnum primers.
