I had better luck w/ RL22 & 180gr. I had better luck w/ IMR4831 under 165gr.

RL22 works really well in the '06 with heavier bullets, such as 190 and 200 grain ones. I think it's too slow burning for optimum results with lighter ones.

I agree with the esteemed members posting above. In the manuals, you'll often see great velocity listed for RL22 and 165 grs bullets. I personally find it a tad slow for said bullet weight and prone to produce rather noticeable muzzle flash. IMHO, it is preferable to go with powder just a tad faster - RL19, IMR4350, etc.

Thanks, Doug

IMO Rl-22 is a bit slow for less than 180 grain bullets.....try the IMR or Hodgdon 4350

For 200 and 220 grain bullets RL 22 is a great powder!!!Especially in a long throated Enfield!

The secret to happiness with RL22 in the '06 is in using neck sized brass and literally as much as you can vibrate down and subsequently compress into the case.

It simply isn't possible to fit too much RL22 into an '06 case with a 165gr bullet, though unless you pull out all the stops it's sometimes difficult to fit ENOUGH RL22 in there...I've managed to persuade just shy of 65gr into some lots of brass....

Oh, and BTW, when you are thinking about RL22 in the '06 behind 165gr bullets, lay in a supply of Federal 215's
I don't recommend anything else with RL22

and the flash while impressive isn't as bad as say.... some batches of IMR4350 or ANY batch of IMR4831, though the muzzle bark is.

I've also come to believe that RL22 and RL19 aren't as hard on throats as some other propellants.

Your mileage may vary.

way to slow for top velocity loads...R19/4350 would be my powder of choice behind the 165

RL 22 is a crack whore when it comes to temperature swings. I have used it with 180 n-part in 06. There are more stable combinations for the 06. Try one of the hodgdon extreme powders. They will shoot warm or cold.

Yes, I do. It works very well with 165-grain Nosler BT's.

What the folks above have said about it being a little slow for the 165 ab=nd perhaps even the 180 grain bullets is true. There are some slightly faster powders that give higher velocities, but are no more accurate......

all things being equal (except powders) my 30-06 shot better groups with imr 4350 than with rl 22. perhaps further evidence that all guns are a little different.

You will get better results with RL19. My 30-06 will give me 3000 fps with the Barnes 168 TSX and 60 gr of RL19.

As Mike said it's a bit flash prone and perhaps a bit slow but in my very worn and hugely long throated BRNO it's the only powder capable of acheiving 2,800fps with 165gr but it takes a grain over max and a magnum primer.

RL 22 is one of those powders that you can't load enough into a 06 case to get into trouble.

That said,it really shines with a 180grainer and heavier. If you can live with accuracy and less then max velocities use RL 22. I would pursue IMR 4350 for the 165/68 bullets.

RL22 definitely works with the 200 gr bullets.

IMR4831 for the 165 to 168 gr bullets
