You've posted some eye-opening results with the .270 WSM. I wonder if the folks will be happy with some of the animals they collect. The .270 Win can leave large holes with 130's as it is, and stepping up the velocity some 250 fps, one would think, would leave gaping holes. This is one calibre IMHO that demands premium bullets.

3350 fps was all I could squeeze out of my .270 Wby with 140 XBT's accurately. More was possible, but it wasn't worth the effort and didn't shoot well. If memory serves me correctly, I was using 80 grains of H 1000 in that 26" tube. I liked IMR 7828 the best, but cases lasted for only a few reloads and eventually I went back to the 7m/m Remington magnum with 160's at 3150 fps.

The TSX bullet are a factor as I have called barnes to ask about this. it seems as many are getting more FPS than the book with book loads.Only with this bullet?? They did confirm that and where doing some testing.

As far as CUP stuff Does any one here own pressure testing equipment?? SO how do you know what pressure you actually have?? So for any one to say that it is exessive without proper test equipment is only making a educated guess. Each gun is different.

That load was with Magpro it had no pressure signs at all and is very accurrate load. I have a very nice excel spread sheet with some other 140 grn bullets loaded to a middle of the road book load and speeds are much better than a standard 270.

And max PSI for the WSM is 65,000, On the short mag website there is a fair amount of data to look over. Not every gun is going to make numbers like this. This was out of a 24 inch tube. Go there and do a search on 270wsm in the reload section. I got loads fromthere and worked up to what they ahd posted.

With my gun I did not have a problem. I have checked for any pressure signs and could not find any. The load is 1.2 grn under max. Even at 2-3 grns under the fps is still in the low 3100's

Any one out there pushing there 270 to that speed with out pressure signs? . Not starting a pissing contest [Smile] just pointing out that the 270 WSM is a bigger margin over a 270 than 50-100 even comparing hot 270 loads to a mild WSM the margin is much more. [Big Grin]

I tried to post the spread sheet but it did not post in the same form. I if some one here wants to look at it I will be happy to E-mail it to them.

Aha, the old factory new caliber trick, load the hell out of them to start with and when all the articles have been written and all the hoopla dies, they cut back 5 to 10 grains and load them at 2700 FPS from then on....Been working wonders for sales for years....

If I was you i would invest in a .308 chambered in your choice rifle. This is a great cartridge, comes in a light guns, short actioned thirty caliber, is inherently accurate, wont kick bad, and still packs a heck of a wallop. Most would say that teh .270 has an advantage over the .308 but i would disagree. They are very similar in ballistics. A 130 grain .270 will zip along around what 3100 fps maybe? Well go buy a box of .30 cal. barnes 130 grain bullets and load them in your .308. I imagine very similar velocities. load each with a 150 grain bullet and they have very similar velocities. The beauty of the .308 is its ability to load up heavier bullets, and all sorts, 165, 180, maybe 200, ballistic tip, round nose, soft point, boat tail. To me it just has teh edge. It may not look swell on paper, but wait till you get in the field. My. 2c

I think they call that progress I remember the same thing being said about the 300 ultra, instead it was compared to the 300 win mag.
See how that ened,.. For me 270WSM fills in a gap in calibers.

Bottom line the WSM smokes the 270 ...Like it or not

I suspect that was a direct, Ray. Good shot.

From where I sit I feel in the long run the 270 vs the WSM is gonna come out to be much like the 06 vs the 308 debate. Some difference yes but not a lot.

I think when it all shakes out this is gonna be a 100-150 fps difference. To some that is enough difference to make a rats and to some it is not.

I have relatively little experience with the WSM but a fair bit when it comes to the old 270 Jack.

From my 23" Lilja tube here is the speeds I run, and I may add I feel quite comfy with the loads.

130=3200
140=3100
150=3000

To me the only edge ballistically would be in the wind-and that would be fairly minimal I do feel.

Just my thoughts.......
