For some time I figured and visualised my ideal rifle, many magazines, gunshows, internet searches, laying in bed at night pondering, hoping dreaming in pleasure....MagnumMauser,300H&H,26"tube,dropbox,1/4rib-hooded foresight-barrel band, rustblued, great walnut, fine chekering, pancake cheekpiece, detachables on integral square bridge bases.
Then one visit to RenoSCI, and there it was! I spotted her in glass display cabinet of the HartmannWeiss stand. It was unmistakeable,Instantaneously I knew,My eyes lit up,joy overcame me,it looked fantastic and like everything I thought it would, and it was a Takedown to boot! the US$27k seemed well...insiginificant. All was good.

At first I stood still, not out of fear, but out of hommage and respect, focusing my eyes and energy, gaining composure, before I advanced toward her. There was no rush, cause I am a firm believer that class comes out to greet you.
I took her in my arms, like a knight recieves his honourary sword.I fondled her, running my hand from grip to tip, eyes following. My palms grew sweaty and my mouth went dry (it was the other way around when I only dreamed of her, strange that bewildered). She balanced, the action was slick, finish superb. She had pedigree, integrity, class and distinction. I was truelly charmed.
All seemed well, until her weight dawned on me, near 10lb all up. that simply aint the practicle weight i need in the field.
These days my mind swings toward something noticeably lighter and less cumbersome.
Yet I still dream of the original dream, still hold her in high esteem, would still like to have her in the rack,to be able to swing and massage her for a few momments in the morning and evening, just to make one merry. She could be my Mistress and a lighter 9.3x62 my wife. I like the idea of hunting with her, but not the reality.
Should a guy still have her if what makes him happy Big Grin, makes him sad CRYBABY at the same time?
Is it a fools paradise?, if it is, is that better than no pradise at all? Am I pissers on my own flames of desire and contentment?

Or should a man be more concerned with what offers him the relaxed feeling of that cool beer at the end of the day, type of contentment? beer?

A friend of mine has numerous customs 98/pre64, yet his great joy and attachment is to a simple original pre64 7x57 with McmillanG&H stock. He says its the last rifle he would rid himself of. And when I pick it up I see and feel why. when all his rigs are laid out, one auto matically gravitates back to that little thing. Its just the one you want to pick up and go with regardless of price or appearance.
Where a mans heart is will be his treasure also.

Tis never a fool that chases his dream.

Your dream can be reality. I say go for it. It is high time your rifle was commissioned and on its way to your gun safe. Talk with several smiths about your desires for the overall piece and its final "all up" weight. Banter around a few ideas. You might be surprised at what can be accomplished.

The only fool is that man that dares not to dream.

I suppose theres no harm in a man enjoying both a cool beer and a fine Cognac. He just has to learn to appreciate the different pleasures one gets out of each of them.
These days,I admire fine rifles more in appreciation of the dedication to craftmanship, than any desperate need to own one. Not to say that one should not treat themselves to one,and to use such graceful tools in enjoyment.

Hawaii Hunter,

Ahmen, Bro.....

A while back you (& me, I waited.....dumb!)coulda picked up a nice Merkel Double Rifle in 9.3x74R pretty reasonably; at least here in Germany and occaissionally one was to be had with ejectors also.

Apparently they've seen fit to raise their prices astromnomically. After this I've seen them less & less in the stores.

Perhaps your Wild Boar Drean Rifle will become a reality one day.....I keep looking too!

Cheers,

Number 10
