I've recently become enamoured..again...with Sako L61R's and AV's....have a couple of them and looking for more....one is a 270 Win in a factory laminate stock...scoped with a 3-9X Leupold it's 9-1/2 lbs,..which in my books is at least 2 lbs too heavy for a 270 Win......I'm thinking it would make more sense with a bigger hole in a longer barrel to better balance the weight as well as justifying the overall weight.....I've built a couple 35 Whelens in the past and thought it might be a good one to do,..I have the reamer, gauges, dies and brass already.....but then a guy I know has an L61R barreled to 9.3x62...a European cartridge in a top quality European rifle is attractive....my other AV is a 280...so the loss of the 270 is not an issue..

Rembo, I really don't know, but I don't think you are losing a lot of weight by going to the 35 cal???? Going to a McMillan edge stock that would be similar to the pic of Wookies rig (great photo's Wookie) would drop a good bit, those laminate stocks are damn heavy. Good shooting!

338-06 and a Mickey stock will drop some wight and give you a good partner to the 280

I had the same gun in 30/06 and had it rebarreled to 9.3x62. Best decision I've ever made!!!

I'm not trying to drop weight, I have lots of other lighter rifles...I just thought that a bigger bore like a 338, 35 or a 9.3 would justify the current weight.... This 270 has a heavier barrel than an AV 300 Win Mag that I just removed the barrel from...it had a walnut stock. Makes me wonder if Sako put a heavier barrel on the laminate stocked rifles to better balance them with the heavier laminate stock.....

9.3x62!! I have an AV with a factory 9.3x62 barrel and I just picked up a 9.3x62 barrel for my 202 Sauer. If you want to be way different, you could always go with the Sako 9.3x66. Lou **************** NRA Life Benefactor Member

You just can´t go wrong with the 9.3x62! Great cartridge, versatile with low recoil. I love mine and I would never part with it. If you want more punch go with the 9.3x64 -the 9.3x66 is a bastard catridge with nothing going for it if you ask me.

Thanks, Jason. That's the one. You don't see too many Sako AVs with that stamp on the barrel. As an aside, I just traded three of my walnut Hunter stocks for three Fiberclass stocks. Lou **************** NRA Life Benefactor Member

Too bad you already filled the barrel channel of your 416 stock, it would have saved you from filling a barrel channel and me from having to open mine. Also, I already painted them with spray on bedliner. Stuff looks and works great! Plain Fiberclass stocks are too smooth for wet conditions. Lou **************** NRA Life Benefactor Member
