Well, a good hunting Buddy had to make a move - got transfered and his hoard of .277" bullets weren't destined to make the move with him..... Hate to see him go as we've shared some good hunting adventures together but he offered & I decided to take the bullets off his hands. Wow! Part of the Booty was a Yellow "Big W" 100 box of 130 gr. Winchester Silver Tips w/cannelure, I'm not real ancient yet; but haven't seen a bullet box so packaged for - Ugh, well, many years. Pulled the Custom Stocked .270 Winchester Ruger #1 w/ a Nikon 2.5-10x50 out of the back realms of the Gunsafe where it's been hibernating as a Closet Queen for quite a while and suddenly re-discovered the "Joys of the .270 Winchester". Sierras didn't meet expectations in either 130 or 150 grainers - probably just not holding my tongue right. The .277" 150 gr. Nosler Partitions pluncked five into .7" with 56.5 grs. H4831SC - Excellent. Didn't know what to expect from the last five but the age old 130 gr. Silver Tips topped the day. 5 shots into <.5" (one ragged hole) with 59.5 grs. of H4831SC crimped into the cannelure with a Lee FCD. Methinks I gotta take this rifle hunting.... Nice rifle., load & accuracy story - would like to ask if anyone out there has any experience with these 130 gr. Silver Tips on game? There's 95 left in the Box - could I be on to a find? Cheers, Number 10

Don, "Irish" - you gotta be joking; my family roots are Debtors from Newcastle to the "New World" to work off their debts. Hope you & Charlotte's VA-RSA-VA trip was successful. Morgan is off to Afghanistan - via Fort Riley. Give Rickie my regards and buy something (anything!) at a "Gun Show"..... The .270 Win. shoots "Wunder-Bra!" Waidmannsheil, Cheers, Number 10

Those Silvertips are the forerunner of the Remington Bronzepoint and the current crop of poly tipped offerings such as Nosler Ballistic Tips among others. Now we have come full circle with the Combined Technologies Ballistic Silvertips! Silvertips were great bullets and still are. PA Bear Hunter, NRA Benefactor

Gerry, I just reaquainted myself with a 270 having not shot one for 13years.... I remembered hating the noise, blast and recoil (a bit of a wimp) so was interested in what this really nicely stocked ZG would do. I first shot my 7x57 with 140gr ABs under 44gr of VVN150 for 2,800fps, then I shot the 270 with 130gr sierras under 55gr of VVN160. 7x57 - bang, 2,800fps 270 - KABOOOOOM (ouch, muttered curses) 2,850fps Me - where is that H4895, suddenly 2,500fps is looking adequate for my usage.........

Hmmm, speaking of Closet Queens, might have to dig my Sako AV .270 out of the dark reaches . . . Gerry, those bullets I believe have been passed down thru the ages, maybe Roge had them at one time . . . I have never loaded the Silver Tips in mine, but they sound like you need to go hunting, Waidmannsheil, Dom. -------- There are those who only reload so they can shoot, and then there are those who only shoot so they can reload. I belong to the first group. Dom ---------

Ohhh, nothing better than a good shooting .270 Win. LOVE the cartridge. The 130 silvertips were something to behold. They, just looked cool!! My father had a Remington 721 in .270 win. We would go out just before opening day of deer season and sight in our rifles. The drill was an empty pop can at 100 big steps. He could always put one or two shots in the center. Offhand. What was interesting, was the many tiny holes that encompassed the can. The more shots, the more tiny holes. Those tiny holes were the result of blown up silvertips!!! A real cool looking bullet that destroyed so much meat. Enjoy the .270 win. but save the old silvertips for collection. The 130gr. and 150gr. Woodleighs are fantastic in the .270 win. Jim, air, Richard, Dom & Id..... I've also been exposed (no first-hand experience) to the rumor that Silvertips can be sorta explosive, although Winchester Silvertip ammunition still has a tremendous reputation here in The Fatherland among German Foresters & Nimrods. When German Foresters used to query GI's about their cartridge & ammuntion; and the answer was either, .270 Win. or .30/06 Sprg. & Winchester Silvertips - "Ah, Gut." was the Forester's usual response. Dunno, gotta try 'em. Cheers, Number 10

Hunting bullets blowing up on aluminum cans? Interesting....just last week I shot a few cans with a 270 with 130gr SilverTips (and some other bullets). The aluminum was so thin and offered so little resistance that I thought I had missed until I walked up to them and there were .277 holes thru them.

Explosive results with the 130 grain .270 Silvertip YES!!!! Next question? I've been in awe of that combination ever since I shot my first .270 over thirty years ago. I suppose it is the bullet that made the .270, and I have 200 W-W Silvertips squirreled away for the future. I know now that I should have loaded Silvertips instead of Nosler Partitions when I took a .270 to Africa in 2007, but that's the hindsight of a gung-ho hand loader. Every deer I have shot with the .270 and Silvertips has hit the ground on the spot with massive entry and exit wounds. LLS

Gerry what you have are the real deal original Winchester Silver Tips. The ones on the market now, I believe, are nothing more than Nosler Ballistic Tips with a silver plastic tip. The new silver tips are not good game bullets in my opinion. The older, original Silver Tips are very good, accurate bullets. I have appox. 1800 of them left from a bulk purchase I made from Widener's Reloading Supply back in the early '90s. I can no longer find them and I think they are no longer made.(SOB) I have used them for over 15 years in my pet 270 Win. and they have never once failed. They make a small hole going in and a normal exit wound leaving, unlike the plastic tips with an explosion on the far side. About half of the time you will find the bullet under the skin on the far side depending on what you hit in the middle. (I've had the same results with the good old Rem.CoreLok.) Oh, and did I mention they are extremely accurate and won't de-form in the magazine from recoil after a multitude of shots. Thanks to everyone for sharing your experiences & opinions. Rae, Thx for the info. I've since loaded another 20 of the load above that originally shot so well. I can't wait to get back out to the range to ultimately dtermine if I've managed to find "the Load" for my .270 Win. Cheers, Number 10

Combined Technology bullet are a high quality hunting bullets. I like them for white tails and they are accurate, at least in my .270 rifles (yes plural, I am a Jack O'Connor fan). Jim

A while back, oh hell it's been at least two and a half years I spotted what looked like a Winchester Myo Featherweight with a McMillan featherweight stock. Gun was a tad heavy but I figured it was the stock. It was in .270 and the price seemed about right so i adopted the rifle. When I got home and cleaned the barrel I also measured the length and it was 24". I've used the .270 off and on over the years and have come to prefer the 150 gr. bullet over the 130 gr. jobs. On the way home from that gun show, I stopped off and my local Wallyworld and picked up a box of Winchester ammo with the 150 gr. Power Point bullet to sight the gun in and get a general idea of how it would shoot. After getting it on paper at 100 yards. I shot three 5 shot groups for score. The smallest was .50" and the larger .75". I a box of my pet load to try and the worst group was .80" with mose able to hide under a dime. I have four rifles in .270, that Winchester, two comemrcial FN Mausers and a Ruger #1. All but the #1 will shoot MOA or less depending on the load and the Ruger is not all that bad at 1.25". Maybe I ought to use them more than I do. Paul B.

Generally speaking, I always had better luck with partitions over Sierra bullets. Odd, I know, but that's that. Have fun with your old gun and new loads. Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my guns

I've used a 270 as my only high caliber rifle for over 30 years until I bought my 375 H&H a year ago. I handed it down to my younger son (who's 16). I love that rifle. I shot everything from marmots, antelope, deer, javelina, elk, black bear and one grizzly with it. Incredibly accurate, very little recoil and always did the job. I too like the 150g Partitions over H4831. I've got the big bore bug now though lol, my 375 is getting rebarreled to 500 Jeffery, should be almost done. yup....this is true.....but they kill deer quite well.....and of course it still don't take much to kill deer if the placement is reasonably good! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." He never said aluminum cans. He said soda cans. They could have been steel; depends upon when he was a kid. Cans were a lot thicker when I was a kid than they are today. If your hunting dog is fat, then you aren't getting enough exercise.
