I just came across a new-in-the-box, unfired / with both magazines, Steyr Mannlicher Model M-Professional, chambered in .30-06 This one has a black synthetic (spelled 'plastic') stock. Most of the ones I saw before were green, so I don't know if there were both black & green, or if it offers a clue as to date of manufacture. I'm not crazy about the stock or the plastic magazine, but they do have a reputation for shooting and that's the main thing! So....this is dealers 'old stock' from waaaay back in the store room, and subject to wheeling and dealing. What would be a fair price?

I have owned several Steyr rifles over the years, including a 30-06 Professional. I also have experience with about 75 or so other Steyr rifles. ALL of them have been fantastic shooters. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Steyr rifles used to be the premium brand in Central Europe before Blaser took over the market. Here are some listed http://www.gunsamerica.com/guns/976757932.htm http://www.gunsamerica.com/guns/976776196.htm http://www.gunsamerica.com/guns/976677756.htm they have a safety on the side and look like they have a lot of drop to the buttplate which would make them kick more. Looks like they come in black or brown, maybe green too. I think I like the newer Steyr with the straight stock and tang safety better http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=57216833 Next on my want list. Let us know how much your gunshop is selling them for. I think $700.00 would be an excellent buy and if he has 2 I might be interested. Especially with a green or brown stock. ____________________________________ There are those who would misteach us that to stick in a rut is consistency - and a virtue, and that to climb out of the rut is inconsistency - and a vice. - Mark Twain | Chinese Proverb: When someone shares something of value with you and you benefit from it, you have a moral obligation to share it with others. ___________________________________

Woods, the models in your links differ in the action used. The initial 3 (Gunsamerica) links use the older action. The last (Gunbroker) link is to a rifle with the new Steyr action - often designated "SBS" (Safe Bolt System). The older rifles are rear locking and have their safeties on the side of the receiver. I believe the new action is front locking, and it has a somewhat unusual arrangement, where the bolt can be locked down (check the picture to see the further indent where the bolt handle goes in the "locked" position). The tang safety (wheel) controls the operation of the bolt (locked, safe, unsafe). I believe this system was intended to win back market share from the Blaser R93, and supposedly allows you to carry a loaded round in full safety in the bolt locked position. How well it works, how safe it is, or whether sensible - I don't know?? What I do know, is that you have to control the bolt when releasing it from the locked position, otherwise it makes quite a racket when it comes out under spring load. Another thing to choose by is the trigger used. Two of the older rifles listed on Gunsamerica have double set triggers. I believe the last (green) rifle of the Gunsamerica and the new SBS have single set - or even direct - triggers?? - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... The first and third have been sold for a while. The middle one is mine. The double set triggers are fantastic.
