Why 30-06? An AR in 5.56 (.223) is the best Coyote medicine there is!

125 gr either Rem or Winchester. No recoil, flat out to 250. Shoots good in several '06s that I have tried.

Because I can't shoot my AR worth a damn.

Get one of the Les Baer or Wilson Varmint models with the 24" heavy barrel. They shoot well under 1/2". If the stock feels funky, just put a Magpul on it for $250...adjusts 9 ways to Sunday. The AR is great because Coyotes don't like to stop, and having semi-auto capability can be a big plus, as well as when several Yotes show up for the party at the same time!

I've got a relatively new AR from LMT fitted with a 16" barrel (1/7 twist). For a scope I have a QD Auto Lock mount from American Defence and a Leupold 6.5x-20x AO. Shooting 55 gr. FMJs from Remington I can't keep rounds on a paper plate at 100-yards. I'm not saying I'm the worlds greatest shot but I can shoot 2" groups with my 3006 M70 at 200 yards with a fixed 4x scope.

Think a heavier bullet would help?

Wrong bullets for that twist. Try some 75 grainers.

Don, the 1/7 was meant for the newer heavy .223 bullets. Although "overstabilizing" a bullet is a strange concept, might as well try some loads in the 62 to 77 grain range. That's what the twist was designed for.

Just a question re coyotes and 30.06.

I see people use 223's on Coyotes, why is the bullet important if using a 30.06
if a 223 will kill them ?

I would have thought any ammo would do.

I use a 30.06 on foxes over here, I only have to
hit it and it kills it.

Thanks

Fair question. My go to ammo is 180 gr Core-Lock from Remington. That load will stop just about anything. I wanted to find a lighter load that would shoot flatter and have a better trajectory.

I recomend using the ammo you are shooting 2 in groups at 200 yds

I use 180's as well (heaps of seconds to get rid off).

Anything out to 250 yards is hold on it and it's dead.
I could possibly stretch to 275 yards, maybe 300 yards
with a little hold over but I don't want to shoot past
that at night with a spotlight.

Anything that is hit by the bullet is dead,
even if I use factory. Foxes especially so.

Are you trying to salvage the hides? Otherwise, you could use about anything out the 30-06 as long as you can hit the mark. I use a 243 as a dedicated Eastern Coyote calling rifle because it is very light and easy to handle with the many fast paced moving set-ups. It's kinda like running and gunning for turkey. The 243 meets the legal caliber requirements for deer should I happen to find myself into deer while hunting coyotes during day hours. So I generally use a load suitable for deer in the 243 for the Coyotes.

That sounds like good advice.

Any 150gr will take care of them.

JBib ask me why I didn't shoot coyotes with an AR and I explained. Folks are just giving me much appreciated suggestions what bullet weight I should try in my AR.

Just pick the most accurate 30/06 ammo for your rifle.

I have shot most of my coyotes with a 308, a 9,3x74R double rifle and my 450 No2 double rifle.

Why, because they are the rifles I have in my hands when I see coyotes. tu2
