I'm in the process of having a 1937 commercial Mauser action in 7mm renovated for a custom plains game rifle. (Yes, I know, I should keep it original ... but I'm not.)

The now considerable delay on the part of the gunsmith is due to his inability to find a Winchester Model 70-style rear two- or three-position safety from any of the usual suppliers. He says he's been trying for a couple of months and no success.

Does anyone know of a very high-quality maker (or supplier) of such safeties that actually has one in stock? And if I do have to wait for the next production cycle, who makes the best of these?

Many thanks in advance ...

Dakota has them in stock. Contact them direct. $149.

About 3 weeks ago Ed Lapour had ones with the high shield in stock. He was doing lows in June I think.

Got to get in my licks here; I have four or five of the two position ones in stock, blued, ready to go.

If you want the three position ones, I would go with Ed LaPour's and not the Gentry or Dakota. I think, repeat, think the Dakota's are made by Gentry. If you want a headache, go with them.

Ask me how I know.

I do install the LaPour safeties

I have Wisner's, the finest in fit and finish, Satterlee's and LaPour's very nice and about equal and Dakota's, good and have not had issues with them. Mine are installed by Ralf Martini, which says all that needs to be said on this issue,if you know gunmakers.

I have never used a Gentry, so, cannot comment, but, there is nothing wrong with the Dakota's.

All in all, I agree with Kobe and of what is now available, I would go with a LaPour high model on a '37 commercial. I have a Type B in 9.3x62 from '37 and it is a joy, but, I cannot bring myself to alter the safety, although I did have EAWs installed.....my bad, but, I hunt my guns.

+1 tu2. I've only had one Dakota, a couple LaPour and couple that came on some comercial 98s a few years ago. Never had a Wisner. The Dakato I had required a longer locking pin since I was using it on a MKX. Dakota supplied it free of charge. Other than that it was a simple install. Had a Gentry I sent back. While I've never had a Gentry and Dakota side by side my memory says they are different. When I talked to Dakota about the pin they had the various parts in house and talked of fitting. But someone else probably did the machining.

The LaPour High would look sweet on an old commercial. Heck on an old commercial a FN style left side 2 position would look good as well.
