Is anybody here shooting one? Of all things, I have a barrel for a TCR-83 rechambered from 30-06 to this monster.

Oh Yeah!! My favorite!! Awsome caliber with unbelievable power. Not for everyone and probably not for many. Everything about it is expensive. In many ways the 30/378 is like American politics. Many will bad mouth what they have only read about.

Hey Rich,

Go checkout RBCD.net

They have a 30-378 load that may get your attention!

160gr bullet at 4300fps muzzle, if I am not mistaken it is still traveling 3445 at 500yds!

What a screamer!!

Nope all went with the rifle.

No complaints except that it throws off some major heat in warmer weather. If you're on the bench during a windless day in the summer expect to wait a loooong time between strings cause the mirage from hell will frustrate the piss out of you. Recoil is very mild in a 10 lb package. You'll need some proper bullets for that thing though!! None of that swap meet crap you're usually shooting ... Big Grin

That barrel mirage can be nearly eliminated by getting a carbon fiber heat shield, such as the ones made by ShootersDepot.com. They are used in conjunction with their suppressors, but may be purchased seperately.

Wish I had known that back then. I installed an aluminum finned heat sink over the length of the barrel plumbed for refrigerant and hooked up to a small AC compressor. At the range you could plug the gun into a wall outlet but in the field it got old wearing the inverter on my back.

Its a good long range rifle, but for hunting it does have some drawbacks. I prefer not to have a muzzle break on a hunting rifle, the double vision makes follow up shots a little hard. WIth that blast and recoil I would be happier with the 338 bullet over the 300, you get better ballistics and better terminal effect. I shoot a 34o wby in accumark which is my comfort level for an unbraked rifle. It makes my 375 H&H feel anemic. The 300-378 is not bad with the brake on, but without, it is fairly stout.

For $.25 you can make a tent out of an unshot target and place it over the barrel. By the time the target catches fire you should probably stop shooting.

To my mind, the 300 WBY is about what the max for 30 caliber, and some will effectively argue that it's too much. I am just not a fan of ridiculously over-bore cartridges. To my mind the 264 WM and 25-06 are pushing it.

I had a 338-378 and still thought it was a little too much of a good thing. The 340 WBY is pushing it. IMHO, I feel the 378/460 case is too much of a good thing for my taste. Cases with smaller powder capacity have been getting the job done quite handily with much less pain and expense for decades. Yes, I have owned a 460 WBY Lazermark not because I needed the power, but just because I thought it looked cool and none of my friends had one. Big Grin

Dr. Lou, fair enough, BUT, you're talking of reasoning. Reasoning, with a man, who necks the 378 down to a 224.
That is like asking a top fuel driver to use less horsepower, reasoning, it'll still get him down the track.
Rich is a long range shooter, with a passion for differant cartridges.
I just wish that I had the resources to do half of the shooting and experiamenting he does.

366 Torque,

I was straightening out the shop and found those dies. Interested in building one?

Thank you for the offer. I really appreciate that, I honestly do.
However, my current income is about 65% of what it was 2 years ago. So I'm just working on feeding my current crop of shooters.
The slump can't stick around too much longer! Well hopefully sooner than later!!!!

you can make it for less than $750. Buy a Savage single-shot in .223 (1:9" twist), and have your gunsmith rechamber the barrel and open up the bolt face. That is what I did with my first one almost twenty years ago. You can buy a magnum bolt head from Savage. Neil Jones makes the dies.
