Only you can decide if it's worth it.
I didn't care for how a Savage felt. I know people really like the new trigger but they just aren't my bag.

Probably a fair price for a Savage in the condition you describe. I'm not a Savage guy, though I did buy one in 7-08 for my daughter when she started hunting. That rifle has accounted for 6 elk and 4 mulies so far.
If nothing else you will have an action to build on.

Savages are great rifles! Very accurate and, as was pointed out, you could always rebarrel it/chamber it.

I snagged one of the Weatherby Vanguard 2 in 7 mm RM today for my son to leave up at the farm . Pretty nice feel, function, and looks good too, all for the $499 price . I am looking forward to shooting a few through it.

Personally, I wouldn't pay more than 275.00 for a basic savage rifle. When I was building my 338 edge, I got my donor 270 Savage 111 for 240.00.

You can buy a brand new Ruger American for just over $300. Has their version of an accutrigger, aluminum bedding block and a three lug action.
