My neighbor is having serious shoulder problems and wants to sell his Browning Stainless Stalker in 30/06 for a 7/08. He offered it to me for $400. The barrel has some rub marks near the BOSS where he has carried it on the ATV. Otherwise, this gun is in excellent shape. He takes very good care of his stuff and only shoots factory ammo through this one. It has had about 5 or 6 boxes run through it and that's all. Is $400 a decent price for this rifle considering I know its history? I don't have a 30/06. Is the BOSS all it was cracked up to be awhile back. I don't hear much of them anymore. Merg

That's a great price. New, these are running around $800-850.00 with the BOSS. If you don't want it, have him call me! I haven't used the BOSS myself, but a friend has two. He says they work, but the time it took to get them tuned to the load was a PITA. Apparently, Browning recommends a setting for a given bullet weight, and you adjust the weight up and down from that point very gradually to see if you get a better result. Multiple range sessions and many rounds later, he had cut his group size from 3/4" to 5/8". My local gunsmith said the same thing. They work, but they may or may not be worth the effort on a hunting rifle. Oddly, my last two trips to the range have had a person with a BOSS equipped Browning shooting. So they seem to have some popularity. If you don't like the muzzle blast from the BOSS, you can get the BOSS-CR (conventional recoil) that still offers the adjustable weight but not the muzzle break. That is a Good Price for that gun. Most of the Abolt's I've been around have been great shooters. The BOSS is alittle ridiculously loud but, the non ported sleeve from Browning takes care of that problem if it's too loud for you. Good Luck Reloader

Ditto. Jump on it, that's an excellent price for a BOSS equipped stainless A-Bolt II in VG condition. You can have it bead-blasted to remove those rub marks if that bothers you since it's stainless. I have a Composite Stalker w/BOSS (the matte blue version) in 7mm Rem Mag and it is extremely accurate after I tinkered with the BOSS settings awhile. Beware, the ported version of the BOSS is extremely concussive/loud, wear ample hearing protection. It does cut felt recoil by about a third (not a problem with a '06 anyway). Thanks guys, He put the non ported boss on there. The ported one is in the box. My hearing is about shot out anyway and I would not even shoot or be around a gun shot that has one of those ported muzzle brakes. I'm gonna buy it. After looking at retail prices (ridiculus!) I think it is a good deal. He said he paid $765 a few years ago for the gun. I remember when he bought it. I was wondering if I could get that smoothed out place bead blasted. Thanks for confirming my suspicions. Merg

Merganser, Congrats! I bought a used pre-BOSS A Bolt Stainless Stalker in 30'06 about 15 years ago for $400 with a passable scope. I've probably spent 10 grand for deer rifles since and none are better. The Stainless Stalker was my only deer rifle for many years and it's been the most bang I ever got for my buck. It shoots several factory loads from 165 to 168 gr.s well, but it especially liked the Hornady Lt. Mag 180 gr. bullets. I shot groups prone off sandbags with them as small as 2" at 300 yrd.s. I have several BOSS equipped M. 70's and believe me if you'll take time to learn to use the BOSS it can really tighten your groups and give you great accuracy with a wider variety of loads. Enjoy!
