What barrel length would you use for a .300 WSM? Has anyone chronographed rfiles with 23" vs. 24" barrels? How much do you actually lose by going 1" shorter? Thanks!

FWIW, I have WSMs and SAUMs on Remington 700s, 24" barrels, and Remington 7s, 22" barrels, and I prefer the longer barrels as they balance better in the 700 LSS-MR stocks that they are bedded in. If they were in lighter stock, McMillan synthetics, the 22" Remington 7s might balance better. Jeff

Marc, I do not think you would loose much velocity by cutting the barrel one inch. I own two Remington model 700's chambered for the 300 WSM. One has a 24 inch barrel, the other a 26 inch tube. Depending on the load, the 26 inch barrel is only about 40 fps faster than the 24 inch version. R Flowers

25.6" because that is the length Blaser puts on their R93 rifle.

I have a 23" (Dakota M-76) and 24" (Kimber 8400) length barrel rifles in 300WSM. I have chronographed handloads for both and I don't see much difference between the two lengths. both will reach 3000fps with 180gr bullets and 2850-70fps with 200gr bullets I can send you my load data if you want it.

I've had 22 and 24" barrels on the 300 WSM. I saw a fairly sizable loss going to 22" from 24" (around 70 fps). I just had a 24" 300 WSM cut to 23"... that's the length that makes the most sense to me. Haven't chrono'd it yet though. This is my 6th 300 WSM and the last one I'll build. Great round.
