Hi All Which one would you choose. Although I stay in Africa, this gun will also be used in Alaska for a recently booked trip for next year. Apart from the smaller and the bigger calibers, I have a 270, 30-06, 333 Jeffrey, 375 and 416. I have already decided on the Accumark, I like the look and it would be my first synthetic stock for my collection and maybe the so called go to gun.

I Had the same dilemma about a year ago. Went with the 340 because of the ability shoot 250 grain bullets...and I prefer the 338 cal more than the 308. Sorry it's not very scientific, but most of our choices aren't based on much more than intangible preferences. Good luck with your decision. Lou **************** NRA Life Benefactor Member

Given the bases covered already....I'd sure be getting a .300 Wby. That thing throwing 200 grain bullets will be terrific for everything short of the really big and dangerous stuff. Further, it'll shoot the same trajectory as your .30-06 with 165 grain bullets.....and maybe a bit better! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." There ain't nuthin better than a .340 weatherby hurling 250 grain partioions at whatever wants killed. Brother you can't beat the caliber.

If you fancy a .340, make sure you try one out before you get it. It is a fairly "lively" caliber... Either calibre is a powerhouse . I shoot both and I find on larger animals like elk and moose the 340 is a better killer. The larger diameter heavier slug penetrates further and leaves a bigger wound channel. If African game is included I would think that would tip the scales in the 340 favour.

I started with a 30-30, graduated to a .308 Win then went to a .300 Winny when I had to opportunity to move up to Elk. Never regreted any of the move ups. After a close encounter with 4 Brown Bears at once and a successful conclusion with the .300 Winny in my hands, I felt the need for something bigger in my hands the next time I hunted Big Brown Bear country. I went with the .340 Wby for a Moose hunt in the Farewell Burn country of Alaska. I can say it performed with flying colors, and will always have a place in my arsenal. I feel very confortable with it in my hands, and would consider it perfect for plains game in Africa. Good shooting. phurley

340 Wby. Good Alaskan cartridge. I don't know if it's because the bore is larger, but to me the .340 really doesn't feel that much different when compared to the .300 Wby. No felt recoil in the field with it. good luck. There are two types of people in the world: those that get things done and those who make excuses. There are no others.

It looks like the 340 is the winner, but I must be honest, almost everyone I spoke to mentioned something about the recoil. Thanks for the replies

Yes, recoil is stout with both the 300 and 340 when shooting from the bench, but as with any rifle you won't feel it when shooting at game. Lou **************** NRA Life Benefactor Member

The 300 is a fine ctg but the 340 will do anything the 300 will and then some. There is really very little difference in recoil until you get to the heavier side of what a 340 can shoot but that's where it really shines. BrianJ, you didn't say what animal(s) you will be hunting in Alaska. If you're after coastal brown bears, I'd go with the .340 Wby, or your .375, or your .416. Other than the biggest bears, the .300 Wby is more than enough medicine for any other North American animal, and for African Plains Game animals. My only regret with my .300 Wby is that I didn't get it 30 years sooner. NRA Endowment Life Member

I have both, like both and have taken both to Africa. But even though my .340 is heavier (neither have brakes), it kicks a LOT more. Not horrible, but it sure seems like it has more pain than some calibers with more horsepower. That said, if you don't mind a little extra recoil then go for the .340.

300 please. If you reload, cases are easier to find and in most cases cheaper, factory loads are much easier to find, the 300 case is perfectly perportioned for powder density with many top performing powders, and if I shot 10 beastes with each rifle, mixed em up, and told you tell me which was shot by which by wound channel and deadness I'll bet a paycheck you'd be stumped or only guessing.

I have had both, still have my 300 Weatherby. Yes the recoil from the 340 is stiffer to a degree, but not unmanageable. The reason I got rid of the 340, is simply that I like my 375 H&H better, and in rifles of similar weights. the 375 is more pleasureable to shoot from the bench than the 340. With that said, given the opportunity, I would have another 340, it is a confidence gun. By that, I mean if you can place the shot accurately, anything hit with a 250 grain bullet, Barnes "X" Flat Base were my favorite, is going to want to lay down and die in fairly short order. JMO. If you are concerned about felt recoil from a .340 Weatherby, you can purchase one with a muzzel brake. Reduces recoil a great deal. I have both a .300 and a .340, and have taken them to Africa twice and never had difficulty with either one when shooting PG. Which one I carry depends on the density of the cover we are hunting.

i had both, the 300wby was my to-go-gun. but the 340wby is awesome. using the 225grs tsx or accubond, or for realy big animals, 250grs nosler partition or tsx, any of then will work nicely, and put the animals down. best regards

I have both, and for the big nasty stuff, the 340 is the hands down winner. Recoil is not an issue when out hunting. When bench shooting, just use a Led Sled or my favorite the Benchmaster.

I have both, the 300 in a German Mk V and the 340 in a LW Rem 700 custom. The 340 does kick a tad, but it does work better on game. When I'm hunting in bear country (which coincidentally is elk and moose and mulie country as well), I prefer the 340. - dan "Intellectual truth is eternally one: moral or sentimental truth is a geographic and chronological accident that varies with the individual" R.F. There isn't a bear alive in Alaska that can't be taken "cleanly" with a 300 wby. mag. loaded with 200NP's, and that includes breaking them down. I've hunted quite a bit with both cartridges, and to me, when loaded with bullets of similar SD, the 340 recoils quite a bit more. And, that's why i'd take the 300. DM

Owning a 375 and 416, I have a feeling the recoil shouldn't bother you much If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

I like the .340 for the larger diameter and heavier bullets available for it.Both are a definite advantage for stopping a charge from big nasty critters.

Hi All The deposit has been paid on a 340 Accumark. Now for the licensing, as you know or at least heard in SA it is quite a thing for a law abiding citizen to get a gun license.
